The fashcards / posters also give the learning environment a fabulous*** French*** look and feel, promoting French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of your learners. They also help learners familiarise themselves with both the ‘look’ of French words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. The target language features singular and plural nouns with the indefinite / partitive article, some with colour and adjectival agreement, which is a great opportunity to begin to compare French to other languages learners may speak or know. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from, other languages, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts, and how adjectives may change according to gender and number. This is really useful for both current and later learning. It doesn’t matter if some of the items don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the flashcards / posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in French, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in French. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of new and unknown words from visual clues or prompts. The 20 nouns are: cap * coat * dress * glasses * gloves * hat * jacket * jeans * jersey / jumper / pullover * scarf * schoolbag / rucksack * shirt * shoes * skirt * sneakers / trainers * socks * sunglasses * T-shirt * tie * trousers There are four poster headers: les vêtements, Qu’est-ce que tu portes ?, Qu’est-ce que tu as ? and Qu-est-ce que c’est ? The labels/answers correspond to the question format. This really does help to promote speaking in the classroom, and I often use the posters for quick speaking refreshers at various points in an individual lesson, or across a series of lessons, really getting the most out of the display. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. PRIMARY SPANISH KS3 VEGETABLES FLASHCARDS POSTERS My younger students love to see Spanish displays in the classroom, and they also work really well for older beginner Spanish learners too. There are 25 vegetables, definite article, feminine and masculine, singular and plural - that’s so useful as a way into the concept of gender. I tend to vary my displays quite regularly, and have different posters up at various times of the school year. We use them asspeaking and pronunciation prompts, and for guessing games too. We don’t actually learn 25 vegetables at this stage, but I use a range that includes some that children may not know yet, such as asparagus and artichoke. That’s ideal for discussing healthy eating, and for generally developing children’s vocabulary in their own language too. The posters work really well as flashcards too, and they’re great for introducing and practising language with a ‘low-tech’ method, giving us all a break from the whiteboard, which children definitely enjoy! I created various sets of Christmas-themed vocab cards to get them feeling festive - it definitely works! I tend to have several sets all ready, and keep them in learning folders, so that students can choose which vocab groups they want to work on, though often, they like to work with the complete set, so it’s a good idea to have a couple of sets so that there are enough to go round. There’s vocabulary from the following word groups in this set: = Les animaux (indefinite article, all singular) = Les parties du corps (definite article, range of singular and plural) = Le temps = Les fruits et légumes (definite article) = Les matières scolaires (definite article) My students really like to learn independently, and I’ve described a range of games that they particularly enjoy. They love the competitive element of the whole-group quizzes, though the pdf version works really well too for small groups - and if you’re homeschooling. There are a lot of cards, which means some prep - if you can, laminate them, not only because they’re far better to learn with, but also because you’ll be able to use them over and over again for years! PRIMARY GERMAN KS3 CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES I have, Who has… ? Ich habe… Wer hat… ? is a whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, perfect for honing language skills during the Christmas period in school. It’s great to learn some German Christmas vocab, though I don’t expect my students to learn all 32 words necessarily - but it’s equally important to introduce them to German Christmas traditions and practices through the images and words, and the game certainly promotes discussion about Christmas in Germany and German-speaking countries in particular, and* Christmas around the World* in general. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. Students walk around, talking to each other and working together to create the chain. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. The aim of the game is to create an alphabetical word chain - this can either be a person chain, though I prefer to have students work together to create an alphabetical line on a table, or even on the floor. There are 32 German Christmas words, arranged alphabetically. The first and last cards have Das ist die erste Karte and Das ist die letzte Karte written on them. If you have fewer than 32 students in your group, randomly select several to have more than one card. My students love it when I play too! The target vocab focuses on the definite article, masculine, feminine and neuter, with both singular and plural - this also offers a useful opportunity to talk about grammatical concepts if your students are at that particular stage, particularly how the singular der changes to den when it is a direct object, which is great for consolidating learning about the accusative case. Try to laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and they do last for absolutely years! Students can also apply their language skills very practically (and artistically!) by creating their own cards on the template, in random rather than alphabetical order. We tend to play against a timer, often in teams each with a German Christmas team name, (you’ll need a couple of sets for this) - my students really enjoy trying to beat their own record! Get the most from the game by playing as often as you can during the Christmas season. KS5 GERMAN ALEVEL GERMAN ADVANCED GERMAN FUTURE PERFECT TENSE 25 high-frequency German reflexive verbs, including a selection such as sich kaufen to practise the dative reflexive pronoun, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated conjugation challenges, answer key & verbs lists, ideal for KS5 German and advanced German students who have a sound understanding of conjugation and tense in German, are working regularly with the notion of a range of tenses and mood in German, and have a solid grasp of verbs that are conjugated with either haben or sein in the relevant tenses. It’s actually really useful to introduce the future perfect tense in German fairly closely with the conditional perfect tense, as the patterns are identical, other than the auxiliary tense, and it allows students to compare and contrast the tenses, and to practice both fairly simultaneously - in my experience, students do not confuse or mix up the tenses when they’re learning and using them together. The workbook focuses on the correct conjugation of verbs, rather than usage. The resource has the following structure: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: German-English and English-German. It’s actually really useful to introduce the conditional perfect tense in German fairly closely with the future perfect tense, as the patterns are identical, other than the auxiliary tense, and it allows students to compare and contrast the tenses, and to practice both fairly simultaneously - in my experience, students do not confuse or mix up the tenses when they’re learning and using them together. Grammar books are not consistent with grammatical terminology, so in this context, the conditional perfect is I would have done or I would have been for example. I’ve used hätte & past participle or wäre & past participle as ich würde gemacht haben or ich würde gewesen sein are no longer commonly used in the way that ich hätte gemacht or ich wäre gewesen is for example. The conjugation is structured in the same way as the Konjunktiv II Plusquamperfekt, which is often called the pluperfect subjunctive in English grammatical terminology, though of course, the usage is different. Students do need to to have a good grasp of the auxiliary verb haber in the imperfect tense to ensure that they can form the pluperfect tense accurately. In terms of the past participle, there are clear patterns in its formation, which students begin to be able to predict accurately: the more they see and use the participles, the more embedded these patterns become.
