GCSE GERMAN A LEVEL GERMAN ADJECTIVES 34-page written recall workbook featuring 400 German adjectives, English-German, with two written recall challenges. My students find it really useful as a year-round written recall workbook, and particularly as we approach exam time - they generally like to work at their own pace, either in class time or at home. The level is roughly intermediate German preparing to move into advanced German. It's useful for advanced beginner German students to provide a language road map with learning goals, outlining the adjectives they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. TIMES TABLES MATHS FOR EARLY YEARS PRIMARY MATHS Multiplication tables 1-6 cards, with matching question and answer cards. I've used these in school and for homeschooling too. GCSE ITALIAN KS4 ITALIAN A LEVEL ITALIAN CONDITIONAL TENSE 25 ITALIAN -ARE VERBS My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS4 Italian students who are moving on to more complex texts tenses in Italian, and for KS5 Italian A Level Italian students as revision. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and those with English as a first language frequently look for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarise themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. I see this a lot with the future tense too, and tend to introduce both tenses quite closely together. It’s also easy to confuse the future tense endings with the conditional tense endings, and targeted practice helps to address that really well. GCSE ITALIAN KS4 ITALIAN KS3 ITALIAN FUTURE TENSE ARE VERBS CONJUGATION PRACTICE My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS3 Italian students who are getting to grips with conjugation in Italian, building their Italian verb vocabulary, and beginning to work with more complex texts, including a range of tenses. Though the workbook focuses solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written Italian is accurate, and that their understanding of Italian across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook. There are three differentiated recall challenges: Written Recall Challenge One: students write the English verbs from an Italian prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, Italian-English. Written Recall Challenge Two: again, students write the verbs in English from an Italian prompt, but the Italian verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order. Written Recall Challenge Three: the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding Italian verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It's really useful for spelling in Italian too. We also use their notes to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which again is really useful, and a very popular activity with students too. The resource works best when used frequently and regularly - students should store their work carefully in a learning folder or file that they can refer to at any point to support their learning and revision. I like to give visual vocabulary guides to my young beginner language learners, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. It’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell time. For young and / or beginner Spanish learners, I focus initially on a single time set, because in my experience students benefit from a very clear outline of new language and vocabulary, avoiding lots of text on a single page - even my older students who are completely new to Spanish prefer this.
