KS3 FRENCH PRIMARY FRENCH CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES 198 BEGINNER FRENCH & ENGLISH VOCABULARY CARDS, 99 BEGINNERS FRENCH WORDS & PHRASES WITH A 60-QUESTION MULTI-SKILL QUIZ I think that lessons in the run-up to Christmas provide the perfect opportunity to revisit language we’ve learnt earlier in the school year - my beginner French students really enjoy going back over and consolidating the vocab that they were introduced to right at the beginning of their learning. I created various sets of Christmas-themed vocab cards to get them feeling festive - it definitely works! I tend to have several sets all ready, and keep them in learning folders, so that students can choose which vocab groups they want to work on, though often, they like to work with the complete set, so it’s a good idea to have a couple of sets so that there are enough to go round.
There’s vocabulary from the following word groups in this set:

= Les parties du corps (definite article, range of singular and plural)

My students really like to learn independently, and I’ve described a range of games that they particularly enjoy. They love the competitive element of the whole-group quizzes, though the pdf version works really well too for small groups - and if you’re homeschooling. There are a lot of cards, which means some prep - if you can, laminate them, not only because they’re far better to learn with, but also because you’ll be able to use them over and over again for years! SPANISH NUMBERS 0-31 FLASHCARDS POSTERS These Spanish numbers display posters / flashcards create an instant introduction to Numbers 0-31 in Spanish, also giving the learning environment fabulous Spanish look and feel. I’ve found that having new and high-frequency language displays also helps promote Spanish as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of Spanish learners. The posters help students familiarize themselves with how Spanish words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. They’re great as flashcards too, a traditional and really successful way of introducing and practising new language. The font is big enough for students to read in various locations in the classroom - I find this really important so that we can get the most out of any particular display - for example we use them for spelling and mental calculation games at certain points in the lesson.

GCSE GERMAN PLUPERFECT TENSE SEPARABLE VERBS ideal for advanced KS4 German and KS5 German students who have a sound baseline understanding of conjugation and tense in German, are working regularly with the notion of past tense in German, and distinguishing between verbs that are conjugated with either haben or sein in the perfect and pluperfect tense. It’s actually really useful to introduce the pluperfect tense in German fairly closely with the perfect tense, as the patterns are identical, other than the auxiliary tense, and it allows students to compare and contrast the tenses, and to practise both fairly simultaneously - in my experience, students do not confuse or mix up the tenses when they’re learning and using them together.
The workbook focuses on the correct conjugation of verbs, rather than usage, but I find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example with the pluperfect tense, students need to have a good grasp of the relevant auxiliary in the imperfect tense, and to get used to ensuring that the past participle is situated at the end of the clause or sentence. Forming the past participle of a whole range of verb groups follows a certain pattern, which students are able to identify and predict the more they work with conjugation.
The resource is structured as follows:
Two alphabetical verb reference lists: German-English and English-German.
Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations:
Quick Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in German across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation.
Quick Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in German, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in German.

GCSE SPANISH DOMINOES GAMES High-frequency Spanish verbs dominoes games: 3 games and challenges are a lively alternative to more traditional grammar & vocabulary ‘drilling’ activities. They will help students build up and embed their vocabulary and knowledge of high-frequency Spanish verbs in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. There are 99 common Spanish verbs in the infinitive form, along with the corresponding English verbs. Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino bilingual verb sequence, on the classroom floor, or on a long(ish) table, by matching the Spanish and English verbs. The game has a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading, and also helps students identify cognates and words that may look similar to English, but mean something different.
There are three games, each with a different level of challenge:
Challenge One features the verbs in alphabetical order, Spanish to English
Challenge Two features the verbs in random order, also Spanish to English
Challenge Three again features the verbs in random order, but this time from English to Spanish, which works a little different in terms of vocab recall
There’s a full alphabetical Spanish-English verb list, which students find really useful as they begin to build and embed their verb vocabulary - we find it useful to have a quick look through the list prior to playing for the first time, and it’s also really good for some additional whole-group pronunciation practice. Each challenge is on a different background, so that they can be easily identified.
To ensure successful learning, play regularly as you work with verbs and vocabulary - against a timer in teams works well to map both improved recall and word recognition, as well as increasing confidence - students genuinely enjoy seeing if they can beat their own time record. Dominoes games work really well in language learning as a free-choice activity - I have folders of resources for students to select their own activity, according to what they feel they would most like to revisit. We have free-choice activity time every few lessons for a half hour or so, which also provides a welcome break from the particular target focus.
There’s definitely prep involved - printing and cutting out. I always laminate my dominoes games, as they’re far more learner-friendly, and they last for absolutely years, so once you’re prepped the set or several sets, you will never have to prep the games again.

KS3 GERMAN GCSE VERBS ACTIVITIES German Common Verbs Ich habe… Wer hat… ? This is a whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, ideal for practising, reinforcing and consolidating 99 high-frequency German verbs. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. Active learning is a really successful way of developing both language skills and general confidence.
The verbs are in the infinitive form, and the aim of the game is to create a German verb chain as quickly as possible. There are two games, each with a slightly different challenge:
Challenge 1: verbs are in alphabetical order, with the question and answer format: Ich habe… Wer hat… ?
Challenge 2: verbs are in random order, with the question and answer format: Hast du… Ja/Nein, ich habe…
In both challenges, the English translation of the verb appears immediately below the German verbs, which maximizes opportunity for really embedding vocab. The game works just as well if the cards are placed on a longish table, or other flat surface. I created the game for my KS3 German learners, who are ready to move into KS4 German, but I’ve also played the game with my more advanced learners, who really enjoy ’going back to the start’ and having the opportunity to get up, walk about and talk - the games definitely provide some essential variety in learning activities.
I’d definitely recommend you laminate the cards, despite the extra prep and expense. They’re far more learner-friendly, and they will last for absolutely years. Distribute the cards, one or two per student, depending on how many students you have in your group. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. I always do some high-speed verb quiz oral warm-up and warm-down activities to really get the most out of the game, for example Wie sagt man SEIN auf Deutsch? or Richtig oder falsch - SEIN heißt TO BE auf Englisch?
There is an alphabetical German-English verb list, featuring all the verbs used in the game. This is useful as a longer-term reference resource too.

GCSE GERMAN KS3 GERMAN KS4 GERMAN IMPERFECT TENSE 25 high-frequency German verbs in the imperfect tense. The quick conjugations have always been really popular with my students, who find them a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate essential verbs in German. I’ve used them in a range of contexts too, such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons. I give my students regular opportunities to work through the same conjugations until they feel confident about how German conjugation ‘works’, and are able to recognize patterns and so predict conjugation accurately.

PRIMARY GERMAN KS3 GERMAN ANIMALS DEUTSCHE TIERE FLASHCARDS POSTERS These German animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous German look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of German. They introduce learners to a range of animals in German from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how German words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. My younger German students really love the animals posters, and like to compare the German and English words. I’ve found that they also help very young children develop their growing understanding of the animal kingdom. We don’t necessarily learn all the animals, but we do use them for pronunciation and speaking practice, and for memory games too. Students definitely notice the different words for the, and ask why some animals are der, and others are die or das. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender.
Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating.
There are 20 animals using the masculine, feminine and neuter definite article, which again is a great opportunity to begin to compare German and English, looking particularly closely at capitalization of nouns. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as Bär and Wolf.

I have, Who has... ? is a great language learning game. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the animals images, makes it perfect for practicing, reinforcing and refreshing a range of animals in Latin. It’s a whole-group communicative game, with a multi-skill focus on speaking, listening, reading, vocabulary-building and developing language confidence. The game really does help to create a lively language learning environment, and is a great alternative to more traditional 'drilling' activities.
It doesn't matter if some of the words don't feature in your immediate or longer-term learning plan: the aim of the game is to encourage children to engage happily and confidently with both the written and spoken word in Latin. The game works well during your work with the animal kingdom in Latin, and as an all-year-round s tarter and refresher game - along the way, children may even get to know some new animals!
There are two games, and two challenges:
Challenge One: with the words written out in full in alphabetical order
Challenge Two: with the words in topsy-turvy order, and with only the first letter given, which is great for a memory work-out, and really encourages children to focus on the individual words, as well as the gender of each word. I like to introduce telling the time as soon as possible in my German learning programmes, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, talking about daily routines for example.
The word walls are useful not only during the***introductory phase***, but also during the practice and consolidation phase, ensuring that key language is always visible and accessible to learners. This is particularly important when working with half past the hour in German, which students of all grades tend to find challenging; similarly viertel vor und nach, which sometimes also required a little extra practice. It’s important not to move ahead with time phrases too quickly, and I make sure that students are fully confident with a time set before introducing a new one.
We talk a lot about the similarities and differences in how we tell the time in the different languages too, and I’ve found that very young learners actually develop their confidence in telling the time in their first language. I do vary my word wall displays on a regular basis, as they’re great as revision tools too, and this also prevents learning displays becoming ‘invisible’ to students.

The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in Italian. The questions range in complexity and challenge in terms of language and calculation, though they are designed for advanced beginner Italian language learners, who will generally be more advanced in their maths skills.
The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and arithmetic creatively and practically too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other. These Latin numbers challenge cards are really popular with young and beginner Latin students, and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of Latin numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher.
The questions have a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in Latin.

Perfect for developing English language skills in general, as well as for practicing and revising numbers 0-21 in English. There are 36 differentiated questions, answer key, recording sheet and number reference sheet. The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. There’s also a question card template for students to apply language creatively and practically, which is an essential aspect of successful language learning, and is also a really popular activity with my students.
Task cards are really versatile too - we use them not only when we’re focusing on the target vocabulary, but throughout the year for sub lessons, as entrance and exit tickets, refreshers and free-choice learning. The questions range in complexity and challenge, ensuring a scaffolded learning experience for students.
All the questions are in English, including a range of English math language. Students may not necessarily engage with that at this stage of their learning, so I use math symbols as visual clues and prompts, enabling students to infer meaning from context. This is a key language learning skill in general, which is important for students to develop as quickly as possible.

36 differentiated question cards 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate and cut out. Laminating is definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as they cards are far more learner-friendly, and last for absolutely years.
answer recording sheet we mostly use class notebooks for recording answers, as this saves prep time and paper, though recording sheets are really useful for more formal assessment purposes.

This set features 10 differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. There are 5 Italian to Italian grids, where learners are prompted with Italian words, and look for them in Italian in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test!
There are also 5 English to Italian grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Italian equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in Italian, they also complete the Italian word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid.

Ideal for children learning German and beginner German students of all ages and stages, providing them with a great opportunity to engage with the written word in German, at the same time developing essential beginner German vocabulary.
The word searches are easily differentiated: the grids have an increasing level of challenge, to ensure that all students can feel confident about their learning - and lots of chances to keep challenging themselves. The direction of the words are indicated by arrows at the top of the grid.

All the grids have a corresponding answer key, which are essential in order to maximise the learning potential of the activity. They facilitate learner independence, also giving them an additional opportunity to engage with the target language - they also genuinely enjoy assessing their own, and each others’ work. This set is in landscape format, as in my experience young beginner German students, as well as older beginner German students, really benefit from a larger font, and having the language presented in the common direction of reading in both English and German, left to right.

PRIMARY SPANISH KS3 SPANISH COLOURS FLASHCARDS POSTERS These Spanish colours posters create an instant introduction to a range of colours in Spanish in your classroom. The posters also give the learning environment a fabulous Spanish look and feel, promoting Spanish as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of the classroom. They introduce learners to colours in Spanish from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with both the ‘look’ of Spanish words, and how sounds are represented in the written form.
The key colours are: aquamarine (blue-green); black; blue; brown (both marrón and pardo - I’ve also included castaño, as this is used to describe hair color and eyes for example, which are great topics to get learners talking in Spanish); cream (both beis and crema); green; grey; navy-blue; orange; bright pink; pink; purple; red; white; yellow.
Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating.
It doesn’t matter if this particular language doesn’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the flashcards / posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in Spanish, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in Spanish.
There are two backgrounds to choose from - Spanish flag or black wave, so 38 posters in total. Laminate the posters if possible, or print on card stock, particularly if you’re going to use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language: they’ll hang really nicely, stay in good shape, and you’ll be able to use them for years.
