Please read the Terms of Use. 6 tenses, 6 workbooks @ 75p each in the bundle, focusing on 25 high-frequency Italian -ARE verbs The tenses are: = present tense (presente) = perfect tense (passato prossimo) = imperfect tense (imperfetto) = future tense (futuro semplice) = conditional tense (condizionale, presente) = pluperfect tense (trapassato prossimo) My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges in each workbook, 900 conjugations in total. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS3 & KS4 Italian students who are getting to grips with conjugation in Italian, building their verb vocabulary, and working regularly with more complex texts, which feature a range of tenses, and including authentic resources. They’re also really useful for KS5 Italian A Level Italian students who are beginning their advanced Italian programme. The workbooks focus on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. Language learners do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and with the Italian conditional tense for example, those with English as a first language frequently look for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarise themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. I see this a lot with the future tense too, and tend to introduce both tenses quite closely together. It’s also easy to confuse the future tense endings with the conditional tense endings, and targeted practice helps to address that really well. Though the workbook focuses solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written Italian is accurate, and that their understanding of Italian across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. Each set is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Italian-English and English-Italian. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Italian across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in Italian, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in Italian. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding Italian verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps template which students visit regularly - it really does encourage them to think about where they are now, how confident they feel, and what they might need to work on a little more to be absolutely sure of their conjugation skills. We also note down any new verbs we meet, which enables students to build up their own verb vocabulary bank. I’ve found that lessons around the Christmas period are a great time for revisiting and practising language and structures we’ve looked at over the semester. The questions are entirely in***French***, and students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their developing knowledge of French in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. Most learners will be able to infer meaning from context / images, which have a real French Christmas theme, such as la bûche de Noël and Père Fouettard, with vocabulary and structures repeated throughout, giving learners a chance to familiarize themselves really well with them. Nonetheless, it can be useful to read through the questions with the whole class first to check everyone is able to access the language, and therefore the activity, successfully. Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word, practising and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, focusing on Numbers 0-100, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity - enabling learners to engage with the target vocabulary, but also aligning with cross-curricular learning - working on reading, writing, spelling, numeracy and French language skills in general. Learners are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. As they move through the grids, their language skills are challenged in a range of ways - from straightforward vocabulary searching, to gap-fill, scrambled letters and more complex questions, which feature mathematical language in French. Hyphens are important in French numbers, and the grids feature these quite clearly, in order to ensure that learners can practise this aspect of language. There is an answer grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Lively whole-group communicative language learning game, perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing a range of fruits in French. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too - particularly with silent s, the audible sound of x (deux and dix for example) and so on. I point out particular phonemes and sounds too, such as***ei in groseilles*** and the soft c in citrons . The aim of the game is to create a French sentence chain as quickly as possible. The game works well if the sentence sequence is placed on the floor, a longish table, or other flat surface. The design is four cards per page, which allows for a large font - this is really important for beginner language learners who are familiar with the written word, and starting to***link spelling with sound***. There are 29 fruits featured in the game: green apple; red apple; banana; cherry; date; fig; gooseberries; grapefruit; green grapes; red grapes; honeydew melon; kiwi; lemon; lime; mango; nectarine; olive; orange; papaya; peach; pear; pineapple; pumpkin; raspberry; redcurrants; rhubarb; starfruit; strawberry; watermelon. All the fruits may not be in my longer-term learning plan, but the learning objective moves beyond simply learning individual units of vocabulary - the images help students***infer meaning from context***, supported by the visual prompts and clues - this in turn supports them in developing their French language skills in the longer and more complex sentences. There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as adjectival agreement, gender, definite, indefinite and partitive articles and position of adjectives, either preceding or proceeding the particular noun. This is a very successful way of really getting the most of what looks like a straightforward game for consolidating the target vocabulary - it is actually so much more! The question card template provides an additional learning activity, with students applying their developing French language knowledge creatively and practically, as they make game cards for the class - this is a really popular activity with my students. Sopas de Letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This mini-bundle features***twenty differentiated word searches***, focusing on a range of fruits and vegetables in Spanish, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The fruits and vegetables include masculine, feminine, singular and plural, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps students think a little more laterally about language, and their new vocab - they may learn la manzana or la patata, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes una for example. There are high-frequency fruits & vegetables, such as apple, pear, potato and cabbage, and also fruits & vegetables which may be new to some learners, such as redcurrant, starfruit, artichoke and asparagus. There are a range of phonemes and sounds too, such as ***the letter j (uvas rojas/ajo)***, which is a sound particular to Spanish, and the***letter ñ (piña / champiñones)***, as the tilde + n plays a very important role in Spanish pronunciation. There are 10 Spanish to Spanish grids, labelled with a lemon/carrots, where learners are prompted with the Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. There are also 10 English to Spanish grids, labelled with a raspberry/pepper, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and English, and facilitates learner independence. There is an answer key grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. ***Answer key***s are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, and they genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing! Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of this essential Italian vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. I like to share essential beginner French vocabulary that I can use in everyday talk with my young learners from the beginning of their French learning programme. The key focus is on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction. We use the set not only when we’re introducing and practising French vegetables, but also for developing French language skills and awareness in general. Students are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. I don’t actually introduce 25 vegetables at once, but in my classroom decor, I generally have additional language to maximize students’ exposure to related vocabulary.
