My German students really enjoy word searches, as they tend like to learn independently and work their way through the increasing challenges. These German Christmas word searches are a real winner - the Christmas-theme is always a great motivator. There are 33 German Christmas words, including a selection of more generic Christmas words, and also some which are very German-specific, such as Sankt Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht. Students shouldn’t attempt to learn all the vocabulary at once, as the objective of the word searches is to engage with German Christmas vocabulary, to really focus on the individual words, genders and articles, and to have lots of practice at general recall, writing and spelling. The German Christmas vocabulary list is ideal as a long-term reference resource, and really useful for students when they are working more creatively and independently, for example***German Christmas reading comprehension, German Christmas writing activities*** and so on. There is an increasing challenge through the grids, and the differentiation does ensure that all students are challenged. There are 5 German to German grids, with a vocabulary list to complete for additional consolidation. There are also 5 English to German grids, also with a vocabulary list to complete, which is a great way to really work on students’ recall and spelling. Students can identify the level of challenge by the increasing size of the grid, number of words to search for, and the direction the words appear in, which they can see by the direction of the arrows at the top of the grids. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. The aim of the game is to create a French number chain as quickly as possible, starting with the first card zéro, and ending with the final card, trente et un. The game works just as well if the number sequence is placed on the floor, a longish table, or other flat surface. I created the game for my young beginner learners, but I’ve also played the game with my adult learners, who really enjoy it too - the monster theme is popular with everyone! The design is four cards per page, which allows for a large font - this is really important for beginner language learners who are starting to familiarize themselves with the written word. Try to print in color if you can - it adds to the visual appeal of the game, which is a real motivator for learning. Download, print out, laminate, cut out & shuffle the cards. I’d definitely recommend you laminate the cards, despite the extra prep and expense. They’re far more learner-friendly, and they will last for absolutely years. Distribute the cards, one or two per student, depending on how many students you have in your group. PRIMARY LATIN CLUB LATIN FOR CHILDREN LATIN FRUITS & VEGETABLES WORD & PICTURE LIST Ten fruits and ten vegetables in Latin, with both words and pictures - I like to give these to my young beginner learners of Latin, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. Children glue them into their Latin vocabulary books, or file them in their Latin vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful Latin vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning. We also discuss which fruits we know and like, and those we would like to try. Children like to create their own word and picture dictionary lists, adding to it as they learn more. I don’t necessarily have all the fruits in my teaching and learning plan, but it’s always a good idea to give children opportunity to engage with a***broader range of words and genders***, which they begin to absorb quite naturally. The fruits and vegetables show the gender of each noun, using (m), (f), (n) and (f.pl) to denote masculine, feminine, neuter and feminine plural respectively. This is really useful for promoting discussion about grammatical concepts in Latin, specifically gender of Latin nouns, how they change in the plural form, and the absence of article. GCSE FRENCH CONJUGATION PRACTICE SAMPLER I’ve created a lot of quick conjugation workbooks for my students and they’re really popular and effective. They’re a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate all the various verb groups and tenses in French. PRIMARY MATHS NUMBERS 0-10 Word searches a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word, practising and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This is a free word search, focusing on Numbers 0-10. The search offers a really useful learning opportunity - consolidating not only new numbers, but also working on reading, writing, spelling and literacy skills in general - children often focus on the arithmetic skills involved with numbers, but it’s just as important to work on consolidating the written words too. It’s ideal for both independent learning, as a fun-time filler as well as a targeted practice of the written numbers themselves. Word searches are easily differentiated, with opportunity to increase challenge gradually, and learners have to look very carefully at letters, and how words are constructed to complete the grid. They are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. Here, for additional consolidation, they also rewrite each number in the word column. There is an answer grid for the word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it! For me, answer keys are essential, as they not only provide learners with another opportunity to engage with language, but they also help them develop more independence in their learning. They’re also a great teacher time-saver - a real bonus! The word search is in landscape format, mirroring the common direction of reading and writing in English from left to right, facilitating learner engagement with the activity. The landscape format is also really useful for learners whose first language is written from right to left. They’re really popular with my students, as they know they can just go to their reference file or folder, and find what they need.
