PRIMARY FRENCH KS2 FRENCH NUMBERS 0-21 WORD WALL It’s easy to create an instant introduction to French Numbers 0-21 with this set of word wall cards, featuring beginning numbers that I like to share with my young learners of French. They’re really useful during the introduction phase, and we also use them for developing language skills and awareness in general. We like to do number guessing and calculation games at regular intervals too. There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format - the words are definitely big enough for children to be able to read - we do lots of guessing and mental math games, using these as a visual prompt. My students all have reference resource binders or files - these can have a range of formats - for instance, sticking into a large exercise book, or punching holes down the left-hand side, and adding to files (we also use twine or thick string). I also use this kind of vocabulary list for quick vocabulary quizzes, spelling competitions and so on, and it also works well laminated for small-group work in class time. This particular sheet is for my more experienced French learners, who’ve been learning French for a while - all the numbers are on a single page in landscape format, so the font is fairly small, but they’re comfortable with quite a bit of text on a single page. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of French numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping beginner French students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in French. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on French Numbers 0-31, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in French, but also to enjoy working with French, and to feel confident about doing so. All questions are in French, and range in complexity and challenge, both in terms of language and number skills. I’ve used visual prompts such as maths symbols to ensure all learners can engage with the questions, and this helps them to begin to infer meaning from context, and to decode cues and prompts to foster understanding. I don’t allow the use of calculators to increase the challenge a little. Some questions focus specifically on French maths language, which students do not always engage with very often. The level of maths is fairly simple, but certainly draws on prior number and arithmetic learning. I’ve labelled the cards A-L, so that if you have the set of 48 task cards, you can use them together. They’re a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate all the various verb groups, tenses and moods in Spanish. I use them in a range of learning contexts such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons.
