SPANISCH FÜR DEUTSCHSPRACHIGE ALEMÁN SPANISH FOR GERMAN SPEAKERS SPANISH FRUITS WORD SEARCH for German-speaking Spanish learners. Sopas de Letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie features a Spanish fruits word search with answer key, perfect for beginner Spanish learners of all grades. The fruits include masculine, feminine, singular and plural, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps learners think a little more creatively about language, and their new Spanish vocabulary - they may learn la manzana, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes una for example. There is a Spanish to German grid, where learners are prompted with the Spanish word, and look for it in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, the grid also features a German word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on the grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and German, and facilitates learner independence. There is an answer key grid for the search grid, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, develop more independence in their learning, and students genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing! The word search is in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading and writing from left to right in both Spanish and German. I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner language learners, ensuring language is very clear and accessible. EFL ESL English Fruits Flashcards Posters These English fruits flashcards / posters create an instant introduction to 25 fruits in English in the classroom. They are perfect for developing English language and literacy skills, really getting the most from classroom display. They introduce learners to a range of fruits in English from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with both the ‘look’ of English words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. There are 25 fruits in either the singular or plural form using the definite article. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from, other languages learners may already know, or are learning, helps them become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts. This is really useful for both current and later learning. FRENCH VERBS 500 high-frequency French verbs, listed alphabetically both French-English and English-French - a great learning support resource for French intermediate moving into advanced French learners, and can also be given to beginner French students, providing a language road map with learning goals, outlining the verbs they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. There are 42 pages in the book, and all 500 verbs are listed alphabetically French-English and English-French. Verbs that are conjugated with the auxiliary être verb are indicated by (être) following the particular verb. I use the reference book for quick vocabulary quizzes too - either I or a nominated student shouts out a French or English verb, with teams giving the corresponding French or English verb - I’ve found this is a really successful way of avoiding more formal vocabulary tests, while still providing students with frequent opportunity to refresh and embed essential French vocabulary. The books are ideal for***KS4 French*** students, and as a refresher and verb audit for those moving into advanced level A Level French. For UK teachers, these are roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA). BEGINNER ITALIAN NUMBERS 0-31 TASK CARDS really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of Italian numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. This ten-page workbook is really popular with my students - they like to work independently, practicing and revising how to conjugate French reflexive verbs - they can be quite tricky, particularly for students whose first language does not have a similar reflexive verb group. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. Students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation, with those with English as a first language for example frequently say je suis me brosser for I am brushing or similarly je fais me brosser for I do brush. There is the additional issue of the relevant reflexive pronoun, and its location in relation to the subject pronoun and verb. PRIMARY FRENCH IMMERSION FRENCH CLOTHES FLASHCARDS POSTERS instant introduction to 20 clothes items in French. The fashcards / posters also give the learning environment a fabulous*** French*** look and feel, promoting French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of your learners. They also help learners familiarise themselves with both the ‘look’ of French words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. The target language features singular and plural nouns with the indefinite / partitive article, some with colour and adjectival agreement, which is a great opportunity to begin to compare French to other languages learners may speak or know. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from, other languages, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts, and how adjectives may change according to gender and number. This is really useful for both current and later learning. It doesn’t matter if some of the items don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the flashcards / posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in French, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in French. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of new and unknown words from visual clues or prompts.
