Space is our topic next term. So thinking ahead I have made some Physical Development / Phonics action cards for my Reception children. These will also linking with our Yoga sessions. I am thinking whole class, group work, phonic sessions, send home, laminating so children can select and complete independently once actions known. These can be done as a class session, early morning activities- during phonics and also printed and laminated so once the children know the action they can select a card and complete independently.

here’s how to play Hot Potato! • Print, laminate and cut out all of the cards. • Bundle them into a deck of cards and shuffle. • Turn the cards face down on the table. Children take it in turns to turn over the top card. • If the child can read it then he/she can keep it. • If a child gets the “Hot Potato” card then he/she must give back all of the cards!! The winner is the person with the most cards at the end of the game. We also have a mat where the returned cards go rather than back into the pile to make the game shorter!

Game A bit of fun with ear… how many silly animals can you make? kids can make up own rules or place the ears (shuffled) in a pile face down and turn over and read… only animal ears work. turn over a human ear and all ears are returned to play or to shorten game out of play. Another way would be to wait until you have a matching pair to put onto you base card.

Print out the cards. laminate the caterpillars and the butterflies- cut the butterflies in half. cana the children match the right half to form a word that matches the post it note held by the caterpillar. It could be played like a memory game. The caterpillar cards shared out amongst the players and the butterfly cards face down. of course these can also be used for sand play too!

Rules Each player needs a goal card to store their cards Place the miss card and the penalty card in the middle of the table Place playing football cards face down Take it in turns to turn over a card. If you read the sound correctly place it in your goal. If you don’t place it in the miss pile If you turn over a red card – FOUL! Your opponent gets to take a penalty. Take card from the miss pile and place it onto the penalty spot. If they read it they keep the card (if no cards in miss pile take one from the paying pile.) Keep playing until all the cards have been used Winner is the player with the most! Print as many cards as you wish to play with. The words have two parts so you can play with only one word per sound or print the send sheet and have two.
