Lucy's English lessons

Average Rating1.33
(based on 6 reviews)

I write schemes of work for English literature as well as English language and creative writing. My lessons have all been used to teach my classes and have been adapted to work well. I teach in a school which uses its own GCSE-level literature qualification, so I have some lessons on unusual texts. I've also got lessons on many of the Edexcel A Level texts. I've taught AQA, Edexcel GCSE and iGCSE, so have a range of useful resources to share.

(1)
This lesson (written spring 2023) has a list of the genres used in the Edexcel iGCSE transactional writing questions up to June 2022 and suggests students consider what patterns they can see and focus their revision and practice accordingly. It also includes some past questions to plan as a revision technique.

This lesson gives a choice of writing tasks and works through good things to include and common mistakes to avoid for creative writing. There’s a bit about how to use colons, avoiding comma splices, tense confusion and cliches. Could be used as an independent lesson or taught.

This set of 4 lessons on The Story of an Hour has resources for understanding the way women are presented in 19th century art and literature, annotating The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, prose structural features and writing analysis of the text. I’ve also included teacher notes on the text.

This is my mnemonic for prose structural features - NESTS This lesson and the table that goes with it explain sentence types, narrative voices, 5 act structure, event order and time phrases. It’s pretty dry as an actual lesson but it’s got lots of very useful information in a condensed and clear format.

This lesson uses the way women are portrayed in Vistorian art as well as Coventry Patmore’s poem ‘The Angel in the House’ to give some background to the way modern readers encounter portrayals of women in literature. This is part of my mini scheme of work on ‘The Story of an Hour’

My mnemonic for the most commonly used poetic techniques is Shampoo Traces and here is a table of the devices as well as some definitions, examples and potential effects. You can follow it up with the powerpoint (answers are in the notes on each slide) and the answer sheet.
