Lucy's English lessons

Average Rating1.33
(based on 6 reviews)

I write schemes of work for English literature as well as English language and creative writing. My lessons have all been used to teach my classes and have been adapted to work well. I teach in a school which uses its own GCSE-level literature qualification, so I have some lessons on unusual texts. I've also got lessons on many of the Edexcel A Level texts. I've taught AQA, Edexcel GCSE and iGCSE, so have a range of useful resources to share.

Scheme of Work on Shakespeare's 'Measure for Measure'

17 Resources
This scheme of work of 9 lessons is focused on high-achieving GCSE-level students. It’s focused on analytical writing and has lots of opportunities for students to read context and critical material related to the play. It works towards an independent essay at the end of the unit.

This 29 minute recording gives detailed annotation on ‘My Last Duchess’. It is geared to AQA GCSE conflict cluster but will also work for general study of the poem.

Scheme of work for A Streetcar Named Desire

This is a great scheme of work that I’ve refined over the years I’ve taught A Streetcar Named Desire. It has roughly one lesson per scene although I don’t seem to have a lesson for the final scene - by that time I think students know what they’re doing! This bundle includes my very detailed and comprehensive notes on plastic theatre in each scene as well as links to music recordings.

This might be for students or teachers. It explains commonly used poetic forms and how form might relate to meaning in the poem. It is useful for higher level GCSE students or A Level students and includes examples from lots of well-known poems used on various syllabuses.

My mnemonic for the most commonly used poetic techniques is Shampoo Traces and here is a table of the devices as well as some definitions, examples and potential effects. You can follow it up with the powerpoint (answers are in the notes on each slide) and the answer sheet.

Lesson on literary context around women in 19th century literature

This lesson uses the way women are portrayed in Vistorian art as well as Coventry Patmore’s poem ‘The Angel in the House’ to give some background to the way modern readers encounter portrayals of women in literature. This is part of my mini scheme of work on ‘The Story of an Hour’

Lesson on prose structural features: NESTS

This is my mnemonic for prose structural features - NESTS This lesson and the table that goes with it explain sentence types, narrative voices, 5 act structure, event order and time phrases. It’s pretty dry as an actual lesson but it’s got lots of very useful information in a condensed and clear format.

Story of an Hour mini unit

This set of 4 lessons on The Story of an Hour has resources for understanding the way women are presented in 19th century art and literature, annotating The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, prose structural features and writing analysis of the text. I’ve also included teacher notes on the text.

GCSE creative writing exam technique

This lesson gives a choice of writing tasks and works through good things to include and common mistakes to avoid for creative writing. There’s a bit about how to use colons, avoiding comma splices, tense confusion and cliches. Could be used as an independent lesson or taught.

Romeo and Juliet short scheme of work

This scheme of work covers the top bits of Romeo and Juliet and gives an overview about courtly love vs the reality. It’s only 8 lessons though, so misses a few bits out. Great as a gap-filler.
