A Level Literature: (8) Hamlet – The Characterisation of Hamlet

William Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Hamlet’ remains a celebrated text, still being performed worldwide on-stage and also enjoying a number of reimaged film versions. In our post-modern world of ‘false news’, ‘conspiracies’, ‘social media revenge’ and ‘corrupted politics’, Hamlet remains an essential text. I have taught this text a number of times and have used this specific (revised) resource to lead my teaching in class, as a distance learning material (Google Meet lessons), as a homework assignment and even as a tool of revision – all have worked well for the students. This beautifully illustrated 16 slide PowerPoint lesson explores the characterisation of Hamlet from a number of different perspectives. This dynamic lesson provides a number of short debate topics (encouraging the students to exchange ideas) and a number of structured written tasks. The study materials contained within this PowerPoint lesson provide approximately 2 hours teaching time in class. This is a complete resource with no additional work required from the teacher, enjoy!

Shakespeare’s classic tragedy forewarns of vanity and its fleeting values, explores the concept of aging and the decline of control, power and identity. In an age of social media, its vanity and its attached fleeting values, our individual lack of control and our ever-changing identities in the post-modern world, this text remains relevant and essential. I have taught this text many times in the last 20 years and I have used this specific resource (revised in 2020): to lead my teaching in class, as a distance learning material/homework assignment and even as a tool of revision – all have worked well for the students. This dynamically presented PowerPoint lesson of 19 slides, includes: a starter activity, a glossary of terms, summary and analysis questions, an academic writing task, a theme tracker, an extension task, a homework assignment and a plenary. This is a complete resource with no additional work required from the teacher. Enjoy!

This 15 slide powerpoint presentation is beautifully illustrated and very engaging for the students. This lesson explores the written techniques of three authors exploring the same topic through a trio of articles. It encourages the students to compare and contrast the purpose, the techniques, the target audience and the potential outcomes of each piece of writing. I have used this lesson many times and I think it really helps the student's skills of analysis.

This 21 slide powerpoint presentation is beautifully illustrated and very engaging for the students. Through a series of structured discussion and writing tasks the students are introduced to the keys terms of Anagnorisis, Aposiopesis, Circumlocution and Bildungsroman. This particular lesson in the series of three really helps to refine academic writing and has been extremely helpful to me as a teacher.

This beautifully illustrated and engaging powerpoint presentation is aimed at A Level students, and is particularly relevant and engaging in today’s political climate. This resource is designed to get students talking and more importantly, writing academically. I have used this resource many times in a number of different ways: as a lesson resource (obviously), a homework and a revision material – all have worked extremely well for me. This presentation explores the concept of ‘fate’ in the post modern world as well as a constant theme throughout the play. …Beware the Ides of March. Enjoy!
