Rounding to Significant Figures - Full Lesson - Starter, Quizzes, Differentiated & Exam Questions

(All answers are provided) I've designed this lesson to build up students knowledge of rounding to significant figures. It starts with 10 quick fire questions on rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and decimal places. Then the definition of what significant figures are is given and to be discussed. This leads into a True or False activity where students need to decide how many significant figures each number has. Following this are the first 3 examples out of 6. These deal with rounding to significant figures when 0's aren't involved. These are fully animated through clicking to get to the next step. These then leads to 3 mini whiteboard questions for students to attempt themselves. Now its time for the next 3 examples. These deal with rounding to significant figures and the 0 rule. I often have a big class discussion around this concept. These examples again lead onto 5 mini whiteboard questions for students to attempt themselves. Then there is an interactive pairing activity where students need to come to the board and select two cards. If they are a matching question and answer then leave them turned over, if not turn them back over and start again. (Snap) The resource then in includes a differentiated focused activity which progressively gets harder. This gives students a chance to master and enhance their skills. It includes 4 separate sections a skill 1, 2 & 3 and a stretch. These are all displayed on the same slide for ease of use. Then to finish there is an application on how this could be seen in an exam situation with 2 exam style questions including answers. I hope you find this resource as useful as my students have. All answers are provided I've designed this lesson to build up students knowledge of rounding to 10, 100 and 1000. It begins with a stopwatch starter where students need to to answer 4 questions based around place value. The lesson follows with two activities involving the number line. a) students have to type on the where the numbers are on the number line/complete the number line. (When in presentation mode, click on the text boxes and type using the key board) b) Students need to explain which nearest 10 to their number and why. Following this we look at the rules of rounding and use a Roundacoaster. Roundacoaster activity Students should answer on on whiteboards what they believe the number rounds to. Then click for the number cart to move. It will either roll back down the hill or go over to the other side. Nearest 10 a) 6 Roundacoasters Examples b) 3 Formal Examples c) Your Turn - 9 progressively harder questions Nearest 100 a) 7 Roundacoasters Examples b) 3 Formal Examples c) Your Turn - 9 progressively harder questions Nearest 10 a) 5 Roundacoasters Examples b) 2 Formal Examples c) Your Turn - 9 progressively harder questions Tarsia Follow Me - mixed loop card activity for rounding to 10, 100 and 1000. Matching activity Then there is an interactive pairing activity where students need to come to the board and select two cards. If they are a matching question and answer then leave them turned over, if not turn them back over and start again. (Snap) The resource then in includes a differentiated focused activity which progressively gets harder. This gives students a chance to master and enhance their skills. It includes 4 separate sections a skill 1& 2 and a stretch 1 &2. These are all displayed on the same slide for ease of use. Then to finish there is an application on how this could be seen in an exam situation with 2 exam style questions including answers. I hope you find this resource as useful as my students have. UPDATED 7th September 2017 (All answers are provided) I've designed this lesson to build up students knowledge of handling identities and equating coefficients. It starts with 6 quick fire questions on expanding and simplifying single and double brackets and one complete the square question. Then the definitions of an equation and identity are there for discussion. This leads to students having to identify the equations and identities. Following this is two examples of show that this is an identity. One single bracket and one double bracket. Then there is an interactive pairing activity where students need to come to the board and select two cards. If they could be an identity leave them turned over, if not turn them back over and start again. (Snap) Following this is two examples of equating coefficients. One single bracket and one double bracket. Leading into a tick or trash activity where misconceptions can be discussed. The resource then in includes a differentiated focused activity which progressively gets harder. This gives students a chance to master and enhance their skills. It includes 5 separate sections a skill 1, 2 & 3 and a stretch. These are all displayed on the same slide for ease of use. Then to finish there is an application on how this could be seen in an exam situation with 2 exam style questions including answers. I hope you find this resource as useful as my students have. All answers are provided I've designed this lesson to build up students knowledge of error intervals. It includes questions on nearest whole, ten and hundred; nearest five, fifty and five hundred; decimal places and significant figures. It begins with a stopwatch starter where students need to to answer 4 questions based around rounding. This leads into a definition about error intervals and why we use the inequality symbols. A nice class discussion is formed around why 3.4999... would be written as 3.5 with a less than symbol for the upper bound. Nearest whole, ten and hundred - 3 examples - 5 Miniature whiteboard multiple choice questions - 15 your turn questions Decimal places and significant figures - 3 examples - 5 miniature whiteboard questions - 12 your turn questions Nearest five, fifty and five hundred; - 3 Examples - 5 miniature whiteboard questions - 15 your turn questions The resource then in includes a differentiated focused activity which progressively gets harder. This gives students a chance to master and enhance their skills. It includes 4 separate sections: skills 1, 2 and 3 and stretch 1. These are all displayed on the same slide for ease of use, however could be printed as a worksheet. Then to finish there is an application on how this could be seen in an exam situation with 2 exam style questions including answers. I hope you find this resource as useful as my students have. Any of the the slides could be printed as worksheets if you feel that would be easier for your class. Miss B

All answers are provided I've designed this lesson to build up students knowledge of calculating with bounds to find the upper and lower bounds. It begins with a stopwatch starter where students need to to answer 4 questions based around rounding. This leads to a brief slide which includes a definition and a basic example about what truncation is for the class to discuss. At this point look at the similarities and differences to rounding. Aka when truncating you always round down. Truncating Numbers - 3 examples - 5 Mini Whiteboard Questions - Bronze, Silver & Gold Your Turn Section A class discussion about how we write error intervals and why we use certain inequality notation. This leads to a recap on why 3.4999... would be written as 3.5 with a less than symbol for the upper bound. Error Intervals - 3 examples - 5 Multiple Choice Questions - Bronze, Silver & Gold Your Turn Section The resource then in includes a differentiated focused activity which progressively gets harder. This GCSE Higher Maths Revision Resource I have used for several years now on the morning of the GCSE Maths exams or sometimes the twilights on the nights before. I find it helps get students into the maths zone and corrects several common exam easy pitfalls. Breakfast Bingo can be done as a bingo quiz activity or as a worksheet. INCLUDES Slides with prompts and answers Questions as a worksheet 60 Bingo answer cards and a blank card template. Attached are the slides in both most up to date and compatible PowerPoint form. The slides include a grid matrix so you can randomly select questions or you can go through the questions in order. Where appropriate the animations have been used on the slides to provide students with a prompt ALL ANSWERS ARE PROVIDED I have put all the questions onto two pages which could be printed as a worksheet for those teachers wanting to use the resource but not as a bingo activity.

GCSE Maths revision resource follows a building house structure. To be able to access the harder problem solving questions students must be secure in the foundations. Foundations It starts with simple areas of shapes, as well as some circumference and area of a circle. Walls Basic Surface Area Examples with step by step solutions Followed by three similar questions for the students to try. It is useful to (Walk and talk/ Model the examples) House Roof Contains one problem solving model type which then leads into a worksheet on problem solving with surface area. This sheet can be used as calculator or none calculator practise. Any issues please email me missbsresources@gmail.com
