Nonsense word fluency measures a student's ability to decode individual phonemes and then blend them together to read. They're an indicator of a student's progress in acquiring early alphabetic principle skills. By using nonsense words, we can find out whether a child knows the most common sound for letters (letter-sound correspondence), and whether a child can blend the sounds to read words he has never seen before. (Joanne Meier, 2007)
This package offers 10 different lists with randomly ordered CVCV nonsense words and includes a graph in which your students can record and track their own progress in 20 different tries. This activity is perfect for literacy centers, it helps to set goals for your students and make them aware and accountable for their own progress. A list, a graph and a timer is all you will need to start building and improving your students decoding skills and their reading fluency in Spanish.

Here is the latest freebie from Mrs. Cortes' Teacher Resources. I have been using cooperative learning strategies in my classroom to keep my students engaged and accountable in their own learning process. These posters have helped me a lot when letting my students know what their roles and responsibilities are when it comes to problem solving steps and strategies. I usually assign a number from 1 to 5 to each child and then use the posters to help them understand what their jobs are, next class, different assignment and so on.
Every student and every classroom is different so use them as you consider to fit your students' needs.
Hope you find them useful, happy teaching!!!!!

Last year I showed my students a writing sample from their first days in First grade and they could not believe their writing and pictures were so different, even some of them would deny they were theirs!!!! So, this is how I came up with this portrait. On the very first day I will have them draw themselves and will also take a picture of them, and I will keep it in my desk. During the last week of school I will hand the portraits out so they can draw themselves again and I will also have more recent pictures in there, it will be a beautiful way to see how they have grown in every way.
This portrait includes templates for grades K through Fifth, two templates per grade (drawing and photograph). I will have the drawings glued on the front of a 12"x 18" foldable (folded in half) and the pictures will go inside. However, I am sure you can come up with so many other creative ways to set it up and present it to your kids, so if you would like to share it with other teachers please email the pictures to mrsaidacortes@gmail.com at the end of your school year. :-) Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!!

There is an old saying in my home country that goes: "Crazier than a goat", way too funny, but after reading "Goats Are Great" by Alyse Sweeney from Reading A-Z we learned that goats are way far from crazy!!! I could have not imagined that these animals were so sweet and curious, and I bet my students did not think so either!
It is a very interesting reading about pros and cons of goats as pets, a perfect suitable text for a fact or opinion lesson. I also created a cut and paste sorting activity to go along with the book, but it can be used with or without a book about goats. This freebie includes both English and Spanish versions.
