Types of writing - fiction - the story of Branwen

This lesson uses the story of Branwen, daughter of Llyr, one of the four branches of the Mabinogi, as a basis for teaching comprehension, speech marks and adjectives. It begins with a simplified presentation of the story. The main activity presents drawings of Branwen and Bendigeidfran. Pupils assign adjectives to each character by gender. The plenary requires the correct positioning of speech marks into an extract of the story. There are five supporting worksheets at text and sentence level.

It includes interactive activities revising characterisation, important quotations, themes and key events, in preparation for the GCSE literature exam questions. A resource that looks at the revolt of Owain Glyndwr. The unit considers the situation in Wales from 1282 and discusses the causes of the revolt. We have an insight into who was Owain Glyndwr and the period of the revolt at the beginning of the fifteenth century is looked at in detail. Towards the end of the work Glyndwr’s legacy is considered and it’s effect on present day Wales. The unit has been designed for any type of whiteboard but can be used to great effect using a digital projector.
