Acrostic Poetry - Year 5 / Year 6
This lesson teaches UKS2 children about acrostic poetry in a fun and engaging way. First, it provides three examples and explains the ‘rules’ of acrostics. It then provides a task that requires children to explore the examples and discuss the poems regarding layout, language and poetic devices. The second half of the lesson explains how to write an acrostic. Learners are given a scaffolded approach and another example to help them construct a class and then individual acrostics.
The resource is differentiated using ‘Gold’, ‘Silver’ and ‘Bronze’ activities to help all children achieve.
Although this is made for UKS2 learners, it can also be used very effectively with Year 7 students.

(10-slide differentiated PowerPoint teaching resource with 2 worksheets)
This lesson (aimed at KS3 but could be used with high ability Year 6) covers Chapter 229 of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’.
In the ‘Do Now’ activity, students reflect on the events of the previous chapter and link each character to the emotions that they are likely to be feeling.
Students then read chapter 229 and complete a range of differentiated tasks to assess their understanding.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Lesson 20

This lesson (aimed at KS3 but could be used with high ability Year 6), covers Chapter 227 of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’.
In the ‘Do Now’ activity, pupils place five events from the novel so far on a scale, where 1 is the least exciting and 5 is the most exciting.
Pupils then read chapter 227 indicated and complete a range of differentiated tasks that test their understanding.
