Exponential Equations

Exponential Equations

(9)
Pupils learn to solve equations where the unknown is in the 'power', by changing the base so the powers can be compared (ie - logarithms not needed). The powerpoint has been made to go with the Cambridge IGCSE course but could easily be adapted. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
The Konigsberg Problem
Owen134866Owen134866

The Konigsberg Problem

(6)
An investigation into traversable networks, centred around solving the Konigsberg problem. Pupils decide whether a number of networks are traversable or not and then look for patterns in their results. Includes everything you need to just do the lesson! If you like this please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Euro 2016 Simulation (Probability)
Owen134866Owen134866

Euro 2016 Simulation (Probability)

(5)
This sequence of 4 lessons is based around students using probability to simulate the upcoming Euro 2016 tournament using dice. I have included an 'instructions' document explaining as well as I can how each lesson should go, but it is advisable to go through this as a faculty first and play it yourselves! If you have any questions or corrections that I need to make then please contact me. Please note that the lessons are heavily based on the work of TES uploader 'dannytheref', who created a similar set of resources for the World Cup 2014 (https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/fifa-world-cup-2014-simulation-activity-6424677). There is also a similar activity on nRich (https://nrich.maths.org/1184). I also need to credit www.excely.com for the creation of the superb spreadsheet used within. Equations involving X Squared
Owen134866Owen134866

Equations involving X Squared

(5)
Lesson on solving equations with an x squared term in. However, these do not also contain an x term meaning they do not need to be solved by factorisation. The idea is that pupils practise solving these as they would a linear equation, but appreciate the possibility of more than 1 answer when they square root. Maths of the Fretboard
Owen134866Owen134866

Maths of the Fretboard

(2)
Students see how geometric sequences can be used to calculate distances on a guitar fretboard. There are several questions to discuss, and a lot of nice uses of formulae. Should also give them a nice practical example that isn't of the type often found in textbooks! If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on TES (all free of course!)
Sangaku Problems

Sangaku Problems

(2)
Based on Dan Walker's resource I saw a while ago (https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/san-gaku-6384597), I then made a set of Sangaku Problems - great to use in the build up to the UKMT challenges! Properties of Numbers
Owen134866Owen134866

Properties of Numbers

(2)
Pupils have to use types of numbers (square/triangular etc) and their properties (even/odd/factors etc) in order to solve problems. The two puzzles used in the activity are not my own (I'm not sure where I originally found them...), but are excellent for pupils to discuss how to approach problems. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on TES! :)
The Diagonal Problem
Owen134866Owen134866

The Diagonal Problem

(2)
Tiles are put together to make a larger rectangle. The question is: If we draw a diagonal from one corner to the other, how many tiles will it cross? The pupils should investigate and see if they can find a rule. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Making Shapes with Graphs
Owen134866Owen134866

Making Shapes with Graphs

(2)
Improved version of an older resource of mine. Pupils are shown some simple graphs (horizontal, vertical, and diagonals based on y = x and y = -x), and have to try and use these graphs to create shapes. It is essential that pupils always label their lines and for the plenaries they can share some of their answers on the board. FDPR 8 lesson sequence
Owen134866Owen134866

FDPR 8 lesson sequence

(2)
This is an eight lesson sequence designed to review fractions and percentages work, and lead onto using ratio in problem solving. Every lesson has a starter, explanation and plenary in a powerpoint, along with a worksheet with a variety of difficulty of questions (some taken from the UK Maths challenges), all with answers. It is a part of a much bigger library of resources that can be found here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/maths-free-resource-library-6439409 If you liked this resource then please check out my other things on the TES site!
Mental Arithmetricks
Owen134866Owen134866

Mental Arithmetricks

(4)
Three lessons on showing pupils some methods of doing 2 digit multiplications mentally (such as using the difference of 2 squares). I've not gone into the Vedic method here although it could be a good 4th lesson to show them how to multiply any two 2-digit numbers. The numbers they use in these lessons satisfy certain conditions which makes the calculations easier! If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Algebraic Areas
Owen134866Owen134866

Algebraic Areas

(4)
Pupils get shown several shapes which are to be represented by letters. They then have to state the areas of some compound shapes algebraically, which are made up of the original ones. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Forming and Solving Equations
Owen134866Owen134866

Forming and Solving Equations

(100)
Pupils create equations from worded scenarios. The Powerpoint has a number of examples to use which you will need to write on, as well as a starter, plenary and worksheet with answers! :) If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Plotting Straight Line Graphs
Owen134866Owen134866

Plotting Straight Line Graphs

(93)
In this lesson, student learn how to plot straight line graphs by using a table of values. There is a sheet of questions that they can get straight into without having to draw out axes. In addition, there is a good question about investigating what happens if you switch the x and y values in an equation, which should lead to some nice discussions and discoveries! Frustums
Owen134866Owen134866

Frustums

(30)
Lesson on calculating the Volume of Frustums, using similar shapes to work out the height of the part that has been removed. A challenging lesson for top ability GCSE pupils. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Gradients on a curved graph
Owen134866Owen134866

Gradients on a curved graph

(23)
Aimed at pupils studying the IGCSE, this lesson shows them how to estimate the gradient at points on a curve by drawing tangents. Includes a worksheet with answers (I'd strongly recommend they use the scale stated on the horizontal axis, otherwise the graphs get a bit squashed together!) If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Graph transformation by substitution
Owen134866Owen134866

Graph transformation by substitution

(19)
Pupils become familiar with the f(x) notation and what some of the transformations actually mean in terms of the function itself. They then change a function based on the transformation and plot the corresponding values so they can see its effect. There is most likely several lessons of work here and it is broken into separate sections. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here! :)
Sample Spaces
Owen134866Owen134866

Sample Spaces

(11)
In this lesson students get shown how a sample space can help when finding combinations of events. They then go onto using the diagram to calculate probabilities based on those events. The worksheet has a variety of difficulties of question and includes answers. If you liked this resource then please check out my other stuff on TES! All free! https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/Owen134866
Probability Investigation
Owen134866Owen134866

Probability Investigation

(10)
Another lesson based on a worksheet I saw. Pupils investigate how many ways a coin can reach a certain destination according to a rule, then find the pattern of Pascal's Triangle. If you like this resource then please check out my other stuff on here!
Tree Diagrams
Owen134866Owen134866

Tree Diagrams

(7)
This lesson is intended as an introduction to Tree diagrams. In it, pupils see how Tree diagrams can be used to show different combinations of events, and can therefore be used to calculate probabilities. There are no probabilities on the diagrams at this point, this idea can be introduced at a later date. The worksheet has a variety of questions, with answers included.
