Chemists use theories of structure and bonding to explain the physical and chemical properties of materials. Analysis of structures shows that atoms can be arranged in a variety of ways, some of which are molecular while others are giant structures. Theories of bonding explain how atoms are held together in these structures. Scientists use this knowledge of structure and bonding to engineer new materials with desirable properties. The properties of these materials may offer new applications in a range of different technologies

AQA new specification-Punnett Squares booklet (past paper questions) Inheritance-B12/13

Dont’t know if you’ve felt the same but my year 11 students really struggled to grasp punnett squares through a couple of worked examples so I designed a booklet solely focused on punnett square PPQ’s with some very challenging questions. As always total marks /21, not too short or too long to take up an entire lesson. A marking grid has also been included. Contains a range of short and longer answer questions also requires students to interpret diagrams. This is a great piece of homework or mini class test, that can allow you to determine whether your students have understood the topic. I’ve attached the mark scheme separately as it’s a great self/peer-assessed activity (reduce the marking load).

Pen Licence Award Certificate Congratulations

Can you remember the excitement when you were finally able to switch your HB pencil for that Berol handwriting pen? I can, but as adults we’ve forgotten how this was once a precious moment. Reward your students with this cool pen licence certificate. A pen licence is a formal acknowledgement by a teacher in class, granting the student permission to use a pen once their handwriting is accepted to be of a good standard. I have uploaded a PDF and an editable version.

AQA new specification-Health and disease-B5.1

(0)
Health and disease lesson created in accordance to the NEW AQA Specification (9-1) for my combined/additional science class (Year 9-KS4). Includes: slide animations, embedded video and practice questions with answers. This resource is suitable for separate science students. AQA spec link: 2.2.5 Relevant chapter: B5-Communicable diseases . AQA Biology third edition textbook-Page 74-75. *The new specification requires students to know the following; Students should be able to describe the relationship between health and disease and the interactions between different types of disease. Health is the state of physical and mental wellbeing. Diseases, both communicable and non-communicable, are major causes of ill health. Other factors including diet, stress, and life situations may have a profound effect on both physical and mental health. Different types of disease may interact. • Defects in the immune system mean that an individual is more likely to suffer from infectious diseases. • Viruses living in cells can be the trigger for cancers. • Immune reactions initially caused by a pathogen can trigger allergies such as skin rashes and asthma. • Severe physical ill health can lead to depression and other mental illness. Students should be able to translate disease incidence information between graphical and numerical forms, construct and interpret frequency tables and diagrams, bar charts and histograms, and use a scatter diagram to identify a correlation between two variables.

Types of reproduction lesson created in accordance to the NEW AQA Specification (9-1). Designed for a TRILOGY class, although content can be adjusted to suit any ability. Includes: slide animations, embedded videos and practice questions with answers on slides as well as a quiz. AQA spec link: 6.1.1 Relevant chapter: B12 Genetics and reproduction. AQA Biology third edition textbook-Page 162-163. Specification requires students to know the following; Students should understand that meiosis leads to non-identical cells being formed while mitosis leads to identical cells being formed. Sexual reproduction involves the joining (fusion) of male and female gametes: • sperm and egg cells in animals • pollen and egg cells in flowering plants. In sexual reproduction there is mixing of genetic information which leads to variety in the offspring. The formation of gametes involves meiosis. Asexual reproduction involves only one parent and no fusion of gametes. There is no mixing of genetic information. This leads to genetically identical offspring (clones). Only mitosis is involved. Good luck with your lesson!
