A poster showing how three English present tenses each have corresponding past tenses. Some of the terminology around verbs can be confusing. Present continuous, present progressive are the same thing. So are imperfect, past continuous and past progressive. An explanation of the three uses of the emphatic tenses is given underneath the verb chart.

There are 8 questions on the text, worth 20 marks in all. Mark scheme is provided. The same text is used as a starting point for four other exercises (cloze, punctuation, reading aloud, and spelling). Suitable for Y6 and up.

This is the second Bingo activity based on the spelling list for Year 5/6) It consists of a teacher card with 50 spellings and their meanings plus 30 different pupil cards ( 10 sheets of 3). The teacher has the choice of simply reading out the words from the caller card, or - for higher ability groups - the meanings. Great as a starter or plenary activity.
Flash game. Teacher reads out an addition under 20 (eg 5+9). Child with correct answer flips the corresponding number to reveal a letter. As letters are revealed, pupils try to make words on their whiteboards. Winner is the one with most words.
4 teacher-led PowerPoint presentations for whole class practice of spellings using Look Cover Write Check system. Individual words are displayed for reading and memorising, then hidden while pupils write them. Once they have finished, they are revealed once more for checking.
