Present continuous, present progressive are the same thing. So are imperfect, past continuous and past progressive. The final activity is a dictation, which is provided at two levels. The material was written for a mixed age Y4/5/6 class.

An accompanying worksheet consists of 15 complex sentences where the task is to underline the main clause. The third in a series of comprehension exercises from Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The text (unabridged) is the description of Scrooge and Bob Cratchit in the counting-house in Stave 1. There are 8 questions on the text, worth 20 marks in all. Mark scheme is provided. The same text is used as a starting point for four other exercises (cloze, punctuation, reading aloud, and spelling). Suitable for Y6 and up.

This activity consists of a teacher card with 50 spellings and their meanings plus 30 different pupil cards (10 sheets of 3). The teacher has the choice of reading out the words or - for more able groups - the meanings. Great as a starter or plenary activity.

The quiz about Wales is linked to an interactive flipboard activity where a picture of the Welsh dragon is gradually revealed as pupils answer questions and flip the corresponding tile if they get a correct answer. A suggestion for using it at a whole class activity is given in the teacher notes. A text about St David and associated worksheet focusses on what we can be sure of when studying history . The task consists of judging pieces of information from the text and sorting them into columns according to whether pupils think they are historical fact or legend. The teacher has the choice of simply reading out the words from the caller card, or - for higher ability groups - the meanings. Great as a starter or plenary activity.

Flash game. Teacher reads out an addition under 20 (eg 5+9). Child with correct answer flips the corresponding number to reveal a letter. As letters are revealed, pupils try to make words on their whiteboards. Winner is the one with most words.

PDF presentation for whole class introduction and classroom display. It consists of an explanation of compound sentences and examples to be worked together in class. A worksheet follow-up contains ten questions where students have to identify the number of independent clauses, and write out the verbs and the co-ordinating conjunctions.
