Slides to be shared in tutor time which provide information about the Stonewall riots, Marsha P. Johnson, Mary Read and Alan Turing.
I shared one slide per day at the beginning of LGBT+ History Month with my tutor group.
Tutor Time - Climate Change
A session on climate change.
Ideal for Key Stage 3 tutor groups.
Students will work in groups to research a particular aspect of climate change and then feedback to the class.
Caged Bird by Maya Angelou
A lesson on Maya Angelou’s poem Caged Bird.
The Learning Aim is ‘To analyse the impact of language in a poem.’
It starts by exploring the connotations of the words ‘caged’ and ‘bird’ before moving on to look at the poem itself.
The focus is on the presentation of the birds through the use of verbs, but challenge tasks are included which ask students to look at the poem as an extended metaphor of racism in the United States.
Students are then asked to write four paragraphs on freedom in the poem.

This is a useful way of engaging students in poetry but also to look at poetry/songs as a form of protest.

An assembly for LGBT+ History Month on the life of Justin Fashanu, the first male player to come out as gay during his career.
It also looks at Justin Fashanu Foundation and Stonewall’s campaign Rainbow Laces. It ends by looking at how students can support LGBTQ+ people in sport.

An assembly for LGBT+ History Month which looks at Ru Paul and the drag ballroom scene in New York.
Pride Month - Jeanette Winterson English Lesson
An English lesson for Pride Month. This could also be used at any other time during the academic year! It just specifically mentions Pride and why it is important at the start of the lesson.
It looks at an extract of Jeanette Winterson’s autobiography Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? and asks students to analyse the language in it.
Suitable for higher-attaining KS3 classes or a KS4 class.

An assembly for Pride Month which looks at Demi Lovato, who came out as non-binary.
The assembly also discusses pronouns and why they are so important.
It ends with several ideas of how to make your school more inclusive for non-binary people.

An assembly about RuPaul which gives a brief history of the drag ballroom culture, which RuPaul’s Drag Race originates from.
The Opening of 1984 for Key Stage 3
Two lessons on the first two paragraphs of 1984 by George Orwell.
The first lesson is about comprehension of the opening extract (which is included in the resource).
The second lesson is on analysing the features of a dystopian society present in the extract.
This resource is in a six-page booklet which is ideal to print for or send to students who are working remotely.
AQA Literature Paper 1: Essay on Scrooge
This is a lesson on how to answer AQA Literature Paper 1 Section B (A Christmas Carol).
It is aimed at lower-attaining students and contains the Assessment Objectives written in a more accessible way.
It also includes sentence starters to help students write a paragraph.
The question is ‘Starting with this extract, how does Dickens present Scrooge as an outsider to society?’ This question was taken from the AQA Specimen paper from 2014.
