These reading comprehension worksheet and activities can be used in the lead up to St Patrick’s Day or for your myths/legends unit. Students can pair up for reading the passages. This product contains two reading passages and a dedicated worksheet on homonyms. Worksheet on homophones: Section A: 7 sentences - students choose and write in the correct word so that the sentence makes sense. Section B: The words that are not used in Section A, students make up 7 sentences of their own. E.g. Section A - Saint Patrick is the patron saint of ___________. (Island/Ireland) Section B - 'Island ’ would be incorrect if used in the above sentence, so in this section students make up a sentence with ‘island’. Text 1: The Evil Black Pig of Monaghan (St Patrick is challenged to get rid of the pig which causes fear and destruction in the village) contains 4 paragraphs Sections A to D. Students can work in pairs to read the story and then answer the 12 questions. Tasks included: Searching for answers in the text, gap filling, multiple choice, adding paragraph headings, word work such as finding a compound word, dictionary work. This resource focuses on the legend of Saint Patrick and myths. The PowerPoint Presentation includes whole class activities and there are questions at the end of the presentation. Children are encouraged to participate in discussion about the different myths and legends in relation to St Patrick/St Patrick’s Day. The resource contains:- 32 Slides PowerPoint Presentation Flexible detailed lesson plans covering 2 lessons (includes learning objectives and plenaries/closing session). Each PowerPoint slide is referred to in the lesson plans. Lesson 1: Children link the shamrock St Patrick is holding to Irish myths, including leprechaun costumes that they might see on St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Learn the difference between myths and legends. They look at mythical beasts and describing words and phrases. Differentiated worksheets - With support - LA draw their own picture of Cyclops and label the parts with adjectives. MA/HA - Draw own picture of Cyclops or create their own mythical creature and label it with adjectives and and use simple sentences to describe in more detail, e.g. its body was as big as a house. Extension: Complete Patrick’s Day Factsheet (colour in/4 questions). Lesson 2: Previous is lesson reviewed. This lesson focuses on the retelling of myths and sequencing events. Three mythical stories on PowerPoint are read out and children decide which one they like better and what makes them interesting. Discuss what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the stories. Differentiated Activity 1 - Lower Ability children cut out and sequence three pictures and write a simple sentence below each picture called St. Patrick and the Serpent. This is an assembly presentation on the topic of Guy Fawkes and bonfire night celebrated on 5 November in the UK. The presentation can also be used as part of a lesson as there are 42 slides with optional follow-up activities. Depending on how long your assembly is, you can choose what to include in as the presentation is editable. It is divided into four sections: • Celebrating with fireworks • Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot • How we celebrate today and fireworks code • Ending assembly with our freedom to practise our own religion and a prayer. You can begin your assembly from Slide 11 which covers the gunpowder plot and why 5th November is a special day. The presentation contains a glossary and the list of conspirators. The follow-up activities relate to what they have learnt in assembly or if using as a lesson, to consolidate their learning. Teacher Notes (4 pages) - Slides are referred to in the teacher notes. 4 Worksheets: Worksheet 1 : Children draw and write simple sentences relating the five senses they use during a fireworks display. An example of this is on Slide 33. Worksheet 2: Children write and draw four things they have learnt about the Gunpowder Plot. Worksheet 3: This is a Guy Fawkes rhyme activity - using the well-known rhyme Remember, Remember, the fifth of November, children answer some questions on the rhyme, there is phonic and word work and children are asked to write in their own words ‘Why should 5th November never be forgot?’ The more able children may be able to complete this and the less able can discuss it. It’s Halloween! Children will have fun playing bingo, snap, memory games and other games with this resource. x30 Bingo Cards numbered 1 to 30 - 12 pictures on each card All the bingo cards are different. It can be played as a whole class or in small groups. Children can dab or cross off a picture that they have with a dry-wipe pen or place a counter on their picture. 36 Calling cards with words and pictures. For Snap! Make extra copies of the calling cards for students to play Snap! Memory Match Game: Photocopy two sets of the calling cards and then lay out a selection of the cards face down on the table. Players take turns to pick up two cards. If the cards match, the player keeps the two. If the two cards do not match, the player returns the cards to the same position they were in face down. The players have to try and remember where the cards are. All About Me booklet. Ideal for Year 1/2, ESL, EFL and EAL students. Teacher’s Notes included. Use it during the first week back at school and find out about the children you’ll be teaching and children can find out about each other’s family and interests. This product is on the topic of All About Me. Aimed at: Reception/Year1 and Year 2. Use for ESL/EFL students for speaking about themselves and about other people. <strong>Content:</strong> • Teacher Notes (2 pages) • 42 Question Cards (colour and plain background) – Laminate and cut out • Rules for whole class activities using the question cards • Digit cards 1 – 32 (patterned and plain): Laminate and cut out • Worksheet (1 page) • Blank question and digit cards for your use **The question cards can be used in various ways. ** This is option 2. Arrange students in a semi-circle. Whole class activity – Laminate and cut out the flashcard numbers and randomly hand them out to the students. Print, laminate and cut out the question cards and place a selection in the centre. You select a question card and then to choose a student to answer the question, say ‘I want whoever has number 7 to answer the question.’ The student that has card number 7 answers the question. If you would like other students to answer the same question, then just say e.g. ‘I want whoever has card number, e.g. 23, to answer the same question.’ Depending on timing, you can decide on how many questions to select from the pack. Working in Pairs or small groups Students shuffle some question cards and lay them face down on the table. They take turns to turn over a card and ask each other questions. Activity 2 – Read and match, cut and glue activity: Each strip of paper has a picture of a weather instrument and on a separate bit of paper is a description of an instrument. This resource comprises 5 worksheets on the water cycle and a missing jigsaw activity. The worksheets are also on PowerPoint and PDF format. These are additional worksheets you can give out during the lesson, use as assessment on the water cycle or as homework.  Two worksheets require students to write about the water cycle in their own words.  Three worksheets entail cut and paste activities. The simpler activities are cutting out the word strips and glue them onto the correct blank space to show the water cycle process.  The other cut and paste activity requires students to write the title in their workbooks or on a separate sheet of paper. Then they write about each word, cut out the strip and glue it into their workbooks. Some students may only be able to complete 4 strips. Let them choose a word to write about. Once the students have written something about each word, they can draw a picture for each strip.  There is a jigsaw puzzle to complete. It has 4 pieces missing with which students complete the puzzle picture of the water cycle. When this is completed, student cut out and stick the labels into the correct spaces on the completed puzzle. A finished puzzle is included to how the puzzle should look. NB: The picture was drawn on the computer and coloured in by hand.  Missing Jigsaw Puzzle pieces (b/w) – Print off the page with just one puzzle piece in place. Students complete the whole puzzle by cutting out the rest of the puzzles (8 pieces) and sticking them in place to complete the water cycle picture. Then as above, cut out the words and glue beneath the correct picture, e.g. precipitation would go beneath the rain cloud. Students can then colour in. Hope you enjoy using these resources.

In the gap-filling tasks, students work in pairs and have to work together to complete their respective worksheets. <strong>This resource comprises:</strong> • two non-fiction reading comprehensions plus questions. • two gap-filling exercises – Pair work collaboration is required. <strong>How we get snow and sleet - Reading comprehension</strong> Students read the text and answer 5 questions. They look for the answers in the text, tick correct statements and write full answers. Gap-filling activity – Students work in pairs to complete the missing information in Worksheet A and Worksheet B. Partner A will have worksheet A and Partner B will have worksheet B. In order to complete their worksheets, the students will have to read together to fill in the missing words on their respective worksheets. <strong>How we get hail - Reading comprehension</Strong> Students read the text and answer 5 questions. Students are required to look for the answers in the text, tick true or false statements and say why, write full answers and make a list. Gap-filling activity – Students work in pairs to complete the missing information in Worksheet A and Worksheet B. As above, Partner A will have worksheet A and Partner B will have worksheet B. Additional worksheets for the weather and seasons unit. <strong>Describing Clouds (1 page)</strong> Student describe pairs of clouds to show how they are different from each other, and then draw/sketch a picture. They can sketch from memory or look up images of these clouds in non-fiction books or on the computer. For example, on the worksheet, students will see that the ‘Cirrus and Nimbostratus’ clouds are sub-headings; the ‘Cumulus and Cumulonimbus’ are sub-headings and the ‘Cirrocumulus and Altocumulus’ are sub-headings. Once the worksheet is completed, students can see the difference between the sets of clouds. <strong>What Am I? Worksheets (2 pages) + Answer Sheets</strong> There are 5 clouds containing descriptions. Students read the description in each cloud and write the name of the cloud that is described and then draw a picture of it. An Answer Sheet is provided with these worksheets.
