Aimed at: Reception/KS1 Content: - 12 Slide PowerPoint Presentation - 3 Addition Worksheets - 4 Subtraction Worksheets - Answer Sheets Start the lesson by asking students if they know what hieroglyphs and/or glyphs are and who used them and why they were used instead of the number system we use today. Slides 3-4 The presentation lesson begins by briefly explaining how the Aztecs and the Mayans used hieroglyphs/glyphs to represent numbers and then the class have a go at working out the numbers. Main lesson Slides 5 – 13 The lesson goes on to explain using whole hearts and half-shaped hearts as glyphs and then using these symbols to solve addition and take away sums. It includes whole class activity and detailed examples of how the students work out the answers. Remind the students that the number of half-shaped hearts tells you how many whole hearts to take away. Students can use different methods to work out the problems, for example, if the students see 7 whole hearts, they add them up to make 7 as one whole heart is equal to 1. For subtraction, if the children see 7 whole hearts and 4 half-shaped hearts, they hold up 7 fingers and then fold down 4 fingers to take away the 4 half-shaped hearts. Consolidation There are three worksheets for students to add up the hearts and four worksheets on taking away. Answer sheets included.
