This lesson is designed as an KS3 introductory module called ‘Invaders and Settlers AD43 - 1066’. It provides a detailed overview of the impact of the Saxon invasion of Britain and addresses key questions such as how do historians find out about the past, where the Saxons invaders or settlers and how multicultural was British society at this time? There is also a focus on the decline and rise again of towns, which is a theme which is returned to in other KS3 modules on medieval towns and industrialisation 1750 - 1900. The tasks and activities included in this module are suitable for the full range of ability at KS3 and are designed as a bridge or transition from KS2. The aims and objectives of this lesson are: Theme: Why was England invaded and settled from 40AD to 1066? Know: How do modern historians find out about the past? Understand: Who were the Anglo Saxons and why did they come to Britain? Evaluate: Were the Anglo Saxons invaders or settlers? Skills: Cause, Consequence, Evaluation and Judgement. Analyse: Were the Anglo Saxons invaders or settlers? When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a twenty eight PowerPoint Presentation which includes starters, plenaries and a range of interactive resources and activities. These include a snowballing stater, buzz , information slides, tasks, activities and video clips on whether the Anglo-Saxons were invaders and settlers and a Venn diagram activity on how did towns change after the Romans left Britain. This is then followed up a series of video task activities which focus on the impact of the Anglo-Saxon’s on Britain, were they invaders or settlers and how do historians find out about the past. I have included summary tables and alternative tasks for this information which you can chose from. This great resource has been designed as a follow on lesson to my resource on what problems faced Henry VIII in 1535, but also works as a stand alone lesson. It is primarily aimed at middle and lower ability students and covers the topic in one simple lesson, which could be extended to two i you wish to follow the thinking skills review activity up with an extended piece of writing. The lesson begins with either a snowballing or a buzz and go starter, this is followed up by a series of information slides on the break with Rome and Henry’s relationship problems. In groups or pairs, students are given a copy of the timeline and the 10 statements or clues and have to work out in which time period the medical idea or treatment belongs. I have also included a slide for online version which allows students to drag and drop labels onto the timeline which can be completed for homework or during lockdown The aims and objectives of this lesson are: Theme: The History of Medicine Know: How did people treat medical problems in the past? When you purchase this lesson you will be able to download a fully editable Microsoft PowerPoint which includes, aims, objectives, information slides starters, plenaries and resources sheets for the main activities. In preparation for the lesson you will need to print off a class set of the timeline, statements and their matching picture clues. These could be cut up or printed off on A3 sheets. The picture clues have been included as differentiation for SEND students, but can also be used to provide clues for the more able. Once students have matched the clues to the time periods, they can then feedback their results for a class discussion. This great resource is designed be used as seating planner for a typical history classroom, but can be easily customised to suit any subject or classroom arrangement. Simply pick the layout which matches your room and then customise the slide and then copy and paste it to create a set for your timetable. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a Mircosoft PowerPoint which includes seven slides and a title page. Each slide has a standard classroom layout including groups, rows and horseshoe. On each table there are two name boxes. Simply delete the text and add your pupils names. Please see previews for more information. The last two slides offer advice on where to sit students based upon research on ‘attention zones’ and the amount of information students retain. When moving the tables around your template, it sometimes easier to group them together. Once complete you can beam your new seating plan on your IWB to help you learn their names and so that everyone knows where they are sitting. Kind Regards Roy

Did Germany experience a Golden Age during the 1920s?

This beautifully designed and written lesson resource looks at the cultural changes that took place during Germany’s Golden Age in the 1920s and looks at how they were interpreted by different groups. The information is accessible to a range of abilities and can be used alongside a wide range of main stream text books or used as a stand alone resource. Depending upon the teaching and learning styles in your school, you could deliver the lesson or print off the relevant slides on art, cinema, nightlife, literature and design and get your students to complete their notes in a market place or gather and share activity. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a PowerPoint presentation entitled Germany’s golden age. The first few slides include, aims, objectives, differentiated out comes and two potential starters. The next few slides then set the scene and put the period into its historical context. This includes a beautifully illustrated and animated diagram on the Dawes Plan. This is followed up with information slides with images and relevant video links on cinema, nightlife, literature, art and design in Germany at this time. These could be used as described above as a gather and share exercise. Once complete the next two slides include tasks and information to help students construct a mind map. In order to extend the more able you could always give out text books to provide additional information that they could use for research. The next section of the PowerPoint looks at several different sources on how different groups in Germany reacted to this new explosion of culture and this is then followed up with an AQA GCSE History style questions with an AFL pupil mark scheme for the new syllabus. However, if you use a different exam board the mark schemes are fully editable and could be easily customised to suit your exam board. This engaging lesson has been carefully written to help students understand the key features of the Weimar Constitution and assess both its strengths and weaknesses. After Germany lost the First World War, the Kaiser fled and a new democratic government of Germany was declared in February 1919, at the small town of Weimar. The constitution that was drawn was amongst the most liberal in Europe, However, it contained a number of strengths and weaknesses that played a key part in the instability which helped the Nazis into power. When you purchase this resource you will be able to download a single page Word Document and an accompanying eleven slide PowerPoint. The Word document contains a learning objective, instructions, two heading cards labeled ‘Strengths’ and ‘Weaknesses’, as well as fourteen cards which describe features of the Weimar Constitution. In late 1992, the UK government announced that it would begin a process to close its remaining 31 coal mines with the loss of 30,000 jobs. The government argued that Britain no longer needed British coal as it could import its energy sources such as a lot more cheaply from elsewhere. This led to a ‘Dash for Gas’ with Britain’s once mighty coal industry being shut down. There were many other benefits and downsides to closing the pits. This outstanding card sort is designed to help students understand and assess some of the arguments for and against closing the pits in 1992. It can be used as a starter, plenary or main activity to accompany any main stream text book or resource on this topic. The nature of the task means that it appeals to the full range of ability. If you would like to know more then please click on each resource. They are aimed at the fully range of ability. You can cut them out and put them into an envelop for students to sort or you can get them to cut, sort and stick them into their books. Failing that they can create a key or use highlighters and stick the whole sheet into their books. I have also produced an American version of these resources called Moral Philosophy, but this bundle is smaller and the resources included have been especially adapted for US schools. This outstanding lesson on why the RAF won the Battle of Britain, was amongst one of our most popular downloads we had schoollhistory.co.uk and has been tried, tested and fine tuned over many years. This newer version has been fully updated with a wider range of tasks and activities to suit the modern classroom, but if you would still like to use the classic version, then I have also included it as a PDF file. These resources are suitable for the full ability range and include a wide range of differentiated activities. When you purchases these resources you will be able to download an eighteen slide PowerPoint to accompany the lesson and two different versions of a four page page worksheet. I have also included a numeracy activity that can be used in lesson or set as homework. The PowerPoint is designed to be used as a standalone resource or if you prefer to accompany the worksheet and contains the aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters, plenaries, pictures diagrams, information and links to video clips, that you will need to teach the lesson. With the exception of the classic version, all the worksheets have been supplied in Microsoft Word. The lesson begins by looking at the military situation in 1940 and gets students to analyse why Germany decided to invade and the challenges that they would face trying to cross the English Channel. This is followed up by another activity which gets students to listen to Churchill’s famous ‘we will fight them on the beaches’ speech and to assess why it was made in Parliament and broadcast to the nation. It has been designed to work alongside any main stream text book on this topic and is aimed at GCSE and A Level Students who are studying Elizabethan England. When you purchase this resource, you will be able to download a 20 slide PowerPoint Presentation that includes aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starter, plenary, tasks, activities, consolidation exercises, information slides, historical sources and an appropriate video link. The main activity aims to get students to review the information and compete the table in slide 10 and describe the role played by each area of the government and how it helped Elizabeth I to govern the country. In the past, I have found this a challenging topic to teach so in order to help students make effective notes and demonstrate their understanding of how the Elizabethan government functioned, I have provided them with a table with key summary of how each section of the government worked and a task to get them them to highlight and describe its role and how it helped Elizabeth to govern the country. This activity is followed up by a thinking skills review activity to help support students answer the question, who had the most influence within the government. The next set of activities involves getting student to either use their text books or the information I’ve provided in the next few slides to research the backgrounds of key individuals at the royal court and what we can learn about who held power and how people were promoted at court. If you wish you could print off the information slides on William Cecil, Walsingham, Dudley and Sir Christopher Hatton and use them as mark place activity. This exercise serves as a useful case study and consolidation exercise to help students understand the importance of loyalty and royal favour in helping to advance peoples careers.
