This activity has been written to help students understand some of the key words that we use in history. It has been designed to be a fun an interactive first lesson that will get them sharing and working together, whilst also giving you time to give out the exercise books and organise your seating plans for the class.
When you download this free resource you will be able to access a PowerPoint that contains aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, tasks, photocopy templates and activities. You will also be able to download this and the word search in a PDF format, just in case you do not have access to Microsoft Office.
The lesson begins with a white board task on what key words do they already know by jotting down at least five key words they already know. This is then passed around the group so that other students can add to the list. After four rounds, I usually get each group to feedback their results and write the words on the board. I would then give out the word search and give them 5 to 10 minutes to complete the task before asking them to feedback and annotate a copy of the word search either on the IWB or logging into the website and competing the interactive version. Once this task is complete, I then set them the heads and tails activity which gets them to match up the key words with their correct definitions, once again feeding back in the same way. Finally, I would consolidate the lesson by getting them to create a history dictionary of key words in the back of their book, which they can finish off for homework.

During the Miners’ Strike, striking miners travelled to working pits in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to become ‘flying pickets’. This strategy involved picketing outside coal mines to persuade other miners to join the strike.
There is an outstanding resource that explores the reasons behind this phenomenon. This resource has been refined and fine-tuned in the classroom over a period of 20 years. It was recognised for its excellence and received a national teaching award from Becta in 2008.
Additionally, all the interviews conducted by the Doncaster Oral History Project, which provide valuable insights into the Miners’ Strike, have been uploaded to YouTube. These interviews, along with their accompanying teaching resources, have been bundled together and made available on the TES platform. This allows educators and students to access a comprehensive collection of tried and tested materials related to the Miners’ Strike.

This outstanding resource has been tried and tested over a number of years and has played a significant role in helping to improve not only results but also in educating our students by looking at the important issue of Native American and Hispanic Civil Rights. This booklet includes a wide range of revision notes, tasks, activities and assessment for learning that are suitable for the full ability spectrum at GCSE History. It is aimed at helping students studying Native American and Hispanic civil rights as part of the OCR GCSE Modern World History: USA Land of the Free 1945 - 1975.
This booklet comes in two sections. The first resource is a study guide which includes revision notes and sources on Native American and Hispanic history from 1945 - 1980. ’ Accompanying each section are a range of interactive activities and tasks from pro and con organisers, Venn diagrams, thinking skills triangles to various mind map activities to help reinforce and check students knowledge and understanding.
The second section, is made up of a series of past paper questions from OCR’s GCSE on this topic. Accompanying these questions are student guides on how to answer each type of question as well as a student mark scheme for self / peer assessment. If you do a different exam board, you can easily drop in your own mark schemes into the table format and adapt this resource.

This great little card sort is designed as a quick kinaesthetic, collaborative exercise, which can be used as either a plenary or mini plenary on this topic. This simple but effective graphic organiser is critical tool for teachers struggling to get their students to understand the difference between the low level narrative (story telling) and higher level analysis note taking and ultimately essay writing.
I would recommend modelling how to use this resource on the IWB or to help weaker students by putting in sub headings. So for example, if I was looking at why women got the vote, I might have the different stages in the narrative section where students could record the key facts. I would then challenge them to explain why these events / facts were important and to write them up in the analysis section.
Another good use of this amazing tool is to get students to review another students essay or a journal article. Very quickly those students who are stuck at the borderline between a 'D' and a 'C' will quickly understand the difference between narrative and analysis and so aid them in making more effective notes and writing better essays.

This great graphic organiser can be used with your A Level and GCSE students to help them assess two different interpretations of history. The headings that I have included are Accepted View / Revisionist View.
So for example, I might give my students two books or articles to look at on why the slave trade was abolished. One might argue that it was down to the role of white abolitionists, whilst the other might look at black resistance. The Judgement box at the bottom is designed to get students to evaluate which interpretation they agree with.
This resource is best printed off on A3. Its simple, but it delivers great results.

This great resource makes a really effective classroom display to help students structure their answers using PEE or PEEL. It looks great laminated in either A4 or A3. When you your purchase this resource you will be able to download an eight page word document with the letters PEEL and a matching pupil speak explanation to be displayed alongside the relevant letter either alongside or below.
Overtime, I train all my students to at whatever level to use PEEL, its a great tool for improving literacy as well as their grades. Once you’ve embedded it you can also get them to peer and self assess their work by writing Point, Example, Explain and Link in the margin of their exercise books. The majority of my written feedback also uses the key words in PEEL.

This engaging and interactive card sort lesson aims to get students to critically evaluate the personally and character of Robert the Bruce and whether he deserves the title ‘Braveheart’ attributed to him by some historians. It is designed to work alongside any standard text book or documentary on this topic and is a lighter and cheaper version of a more detailed lesson which includes a worksheet and more detailed PowerPoint: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/resource-13135724 .
This lesson features a card sort exercise and a continuum task, all designed to prepare students for writing an extended answer to the question.
