If you are looking for a fun, interactive revision game that can be used as a starter or plenary then this resource for you. It particularly good at injecting a bit of competition which will draw in some of those under achieving students, especially the boys who might be very good at learning key facts via a game. These revision cards cover the key factors that you will need to know for 19th Century Public Health in Britain. They make an excellent fun starter, mini plenary or plenary to any lesson. They can also be used by students as revision flash cards. I’ve provided them in word so you can easily adapt them for your own classes. There are three main ways that you can use them. Game 1 involves getting students to read out the key words until the other guesses the topic correctly. Game 2 involves additional challenge and stretch by getting students to describe the topic without using any of the key words on the card. The third game, which adds an additional layer of fun or challenge involves playing a round of Pictionary or Charades. I normally give my students 3 minutes of each round to help activate the learning and warm up the class. You could also have a freestyle round where students decide which game they want to play linked to their learning style. If you are trying to engage some under achieving boys, add some competition and get them to keep score in the back of their books. I would recommend printing them off on card and getting your students to cut them out. Then put the cards into an envelope for class use. If you are a student then keep them in your pocket and use them as a flash card to help you learn the key facts, If there is a term that you do not understand then as your teacher or do some extra research. From a revision perspective, you can print off the cards and get your students to learn the key words for a test or for their exams. These are a win, win resource. The kids will love them and they will help to improve your results. This resource is supplied in Microsoft Word so it can be easily edited and adapted to suit your students. Kind Regards Roy

These tried and tested resource looks at one of the most amazing feats of the modern age, the building of the railways in Victorian Britain. The accomplishment of the navvies, often overlooked in history, rivals that of the pyramid builders and those who built the Great Wall of China. This resource is part of a series that have been written on the Transport Revolution. It follows on from the birth of the railways, but can be sued a stand alone resource. The PowerPoint is design to support the worksheet, but can be used independently. The activities are designed to appeal to a wide range of learners. There are five activities in the PowerPoint including, a snowballing starter of the key words, a class debate, heads and tails, labelling exercise and a word search. The aims and objectives are: Theme: Transport Revolution 1750 - 1900 Know: What problems faced engineers whilst building the railways? Understand: How did engineers overcome the shape of the land? Evaluate: Why did the railways rapidly grow from 1850 – 1900? Skills: Cause, Consequence, Significance and Source Analysis WILF: What Am I Looking For? Identify & describe: how railway engineers built the railways? Explain: How railway engineers overcame the shape of the land? Analyse: Begin to come to a judgement on why the railways expanded rapidly between 1850 – 1900? The PowerPoint also includes some links to some amazing videos on You Tube. Please remember that the PP must be in show mode in order for the hyperlink to work. Anyway, have fun with this lesson. My students always love it. Its fully customisable as everything in provided in Microsoft documents. This outstanding resource which I have used many times over the past 25 years in one shape or another during lesson observations with Ofsted and or LEA advisors. It forms part of a series that I have uploaded to the TES on the Transport Revolution 1750 - 1900. This particular resources focus on the birth of the railways up to the period known as 'Railway Mania' in the 1850s. The PowerPoint includes aims, objectives, starters and three activities that are accessible to a wide spectrum of learners. These activities include a snowballing starter of the key words, a heads and tails activity as well as a thinking skills review triangle activity on what were the most important steps / inventions to the birth of the railways. The PowerPoint also contains a number of linked in video clips and animated steam engines. I would like to add that I am not a train spotter, but I've always found that my students, especially the boys have thoroughly enjoyed this topic so put the fun back into the industrial revolution by looking a few machines rather than just focusing on social history. They are based upon some classic interactive resources that have never failed to engage my students over 30 years. These outstanding resources has been a labour of love on the Gold Rush 1848 - 1850s. I have spared no expense in time and effort in trying to produce what I feel is a world class resource. However, don’t take my word for it and check it out for yourself and see what you think. It forms a series of resources that I have written for my students on the American West and are available for download from my TES shop - The History Academy. When you purchase this resource you will be supplied with a PowerPoint and an accompanying card sort on the consequences of the gold rush for different groups living in the American West. The PowerPoint contains the aims and objectives as well as six activities, including a snowballing starter of the key words, a source based analysis question on the short term consequences, a source annotation exercise, two thinking skills graphic organisers that try students to explain the importance of each stage of the gold rush as well as come to an overall conclusion on the negative and positive consequences for different groups living in the American West. I have also included an exam style question with a pupil mark scheme to help students structure a balanced answer. The card sort includes statements on the impact of the gold rush on different groups in western society, law and order, the economy and expansion of the US. Additional tasks get students to review which consequences were positive or negative for different groups. This should be used alongside the PowerPoint. I’ve also included some carefully selected video clips, which are hyperlinked to You Tube. Please remember that they will only work whilst the slide show is on. They have been uploaded in both Office and PDF formats. I’ve provided two resources with this lesson. They can be used in any subject across the curriculum. These fun and engaging resources on the Transport Revolution, focus on the development of the new roads, turnpike trusts, coaching inns and the impact that they had on everyday life. They are designed to be suitable for the full range of ability and include a wide range of differentiated tasks and activities that should last at least two lessons. When you purchase these resources you will be able to download a Powerpoint presentation and three worksheets that can be printed separately or as a booklet. The first worksheet looks at the state of the roads in 1750 and why the government decided to set up the Turnpike Trusts after the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. The Second worksheet can be used either in lesson or set as homework and looks at the different road designs that the road builders experimented with until they finally settled on McAdams design. Later they added tar and created TarMcadams or Tarmac as we call it today. The third worksheets looks at the impact of the new roads and the development of coaching inns and the rise of the highwayman. The PowerPoint includes aims, objectives, tasks and activities to help facilitate the lesson. All the documents have also been uploaded as PDFs just in case you need to upload them or don’t have access to Office. This great resource has been tried and tested over the past 30 years and has never failed to grab the attention and engage my students. This introductory lesson looks at the causes and consequences of the Transport Revolution in Britain. The worksheet is designed for middle and top set students, whilst the accompanying PowerPoint has a mix of activities to engage the full range of abilities. The PowerPoint includes the aims and objectives, information slides, eight activities, an assessment, pupil mark scheme and three outstanding video clips from interviews with Doncaster coal miners that I created as part of an oral history project. This great activity is designed to help students understand how various inventions and ideas helped to solve the problems facing coal miners 1750 - 1900. Students are given five problem cards such as low wages, choke damp, fire damp, flooding and collapsing roofs. They then have to match at least two solutions to each problem. I've also included an extension exercise to get students to create a key to help them identify which problems came earlier or later in the period. This simple but effective graphic organiser is critical tool for teachers struggling to get their students to understand the difference between the low level narrative (story telling) and higher level analysis note taking and ultimately essay writing. I would recommend modelling how to use this resource on the IWB or to help weaker students by putting in sub headings. So for example, if I was looking at why women got the vote, I might have the different stages in the narrative section where students could record the key facts. I would then challenge them to explain why these events / facts were important and to write them up in the analysis section. Another good use of this amazing tool is to get students to review another students essay or a journal article. Very quickly those students who are stuck at the borderline between a 'D' and a 'C' will quickly understand the difference between narrative and analysis and so aid them in making more effective notes and writing better essays. This great graphic organiser can be used with your A Level and GCSE students to help them assess two different interpretations of history. The headings that I have included are Accepted View / Revisionist View. So for example, I might give my students two books or articles to look at on why the slave trade was abolished. One might argue that it was down to the role of white abolitionists, whilst the other might look at black resistance. The Judgement box at the bottom is designed to get students to evaluate which interpretation they agree with. This resource is best printed off on A3. Its simple, but it delivers great results.
