This great little card sort gets students to look at the key reasons why prohibition failed. It can be used with a range of abilities and has never failed to get my students engaged, whilst improving their understanding of the topic. The resource includes four headings - corruption, organised crime, lack of support and poor enforcement, as well as 22 statements which students are then asked to sort the cards under. I have always agonised over the heading ‘poor enforcement’ but as with all my resources, it is in Microsoft Word so you can customise it to suit your own students. Theme: Why did prohibition fail? Bayeux Tapestry Card Sort Activity for 1066

This great little resource / puzzle is designed to help develop students' knowledge of the events in 1066 from the Norman perspective by getting them to match the captions with the scenes from the Bayeux Tapestry. This outstanding story boarding activity will also give students the opportunity to discuss, self and peer assess their understanding of one of the worlds most famous primary sources. Objective: To sort the story of what happened in 1066 into its correct chronological order using the pictures from the Bayeux Tapestry. Instruction: Cut out the pictures and captions. Match the pictures to the captions. Then place them in order to tell the story of the key events of the Tapestry. There are 13 captions and 13 images I have provided two documents for this activity - but you only really need the first one as I wanted to be able to show case the high quality images that I have carefully selected, so that they would photocopy for classroom use in either greyscale or colour. I would recommend getting students to stick their work on to A3 paper, but they could just as easily span a double page spread in an A4 exercise book. This activity is suitable for abilities of students, but I have deliberately included some challenge in this activity so that students will have to work collaboratively and look closely at the source. This great little card sort is a must have for anyone studying why William won the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The resource in a word format so it can be fully adapted to suit your learners, but I have made sure that it's accessible for core, foundation and gifted and talented students. This card sort can be used as a starter, mini plenary or plenary. It can also be used as a planning exercise before students attempt writing an extended essay for assessment purposes on the topic. This great little resources on Hitler's foreign policy is designed to be used as either a starter, mini plenary or topic plenary. It can also be used as a homework or revision exercise on Hitler's foreign policy. Students are given 4 headings connected to Hitler's foreign policy. They are then expected to sort the cards under the correct headings such as: ripping up the Treaty of Versailles, Lebensraum – Living Space, Defeat Communism and Factors which helped Hitler. This popular and really useful card sort can be used as a starter or plenary on the impact of the Black Death on England. Unraveling Thomas Becket's Murder: Causes and Effects Card Sort

This card sort is great way to get students to sort through the causes and consequences of the death of Thomas Becket in 1170. It is designed to fit around any text book or video on this topic and provides support for lower and middle ability students. Students are given eight cards with the causes and consequences mixed up and two headings labelled causes and consequences. This should take a core group no more than 10 minutes before feeding back and then sticking their cards into their books, whereas a low ability group might take 15 minutes. The process can be speeded up by getting students to create a key, rather than curring out the cards and then sticking the sheet into their books. This active learning activity makes a great starter, mini plenary and plenary. When you purchase this activity, you will be able to download a single page Word document, which can be edited to suit your own students. Welcome to my little corner of the TES. This resource on the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 covers the full story from 1066 to 1086 and includes the following sub chapters: 1 Skills Check 2 Contenders for the throne in 1066 3 The Battle of Stamford Bridge 4 The Battle of Hastings 5 How did King Harold Die? 6 The Victory Completed This resource is primarily aimed at foundation and core students. However, there are activities to stretch students, but many of the tasks are simple filling in the missing word and true and false statements, mixed in with simple questions and answers as well as extension and homework activities such as writing new newspaper reports for the Battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings. This is a tried and tested resource which has been tweaked over 26 years. It works brilliantly and is a highly popular download. This resource on the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 covers the full story from 1066 to 1086 and includes the following sub chapters: 1 Skills Check 2 Contenders for the throne in 1066 3 The Battle of Stamford Bridge 4 The Battle of Hastings 5 How did King Harold Die? 6 The Victory Completed This resource is aimed at foundation and core students in the UK. There are activities to stretch students, but many of the tasks are simple filling in the missing word and true and false statements, mixed in with simple questions and answers as well as extension and homework activities such as writing new newspaper reports for the Battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings. This is a tried and tested resource which has been tweaked over 24 years. It works brilliantly. I’ve also included some of the accompanying PowerPoints with aims, objectives, differentiated outcomes, starters and plenaries to accompany this resource. These revision cards cover all the key factors that you will need to know about the Roman Empire. They make an excellent fun starter, mini plenary or plenary to any lesson. They can also be used by students as revision flash cards. If you are looking for a fun, interactive revision game then this resource for you. It particularly good at injecting a bit of competition which will draw in some of those under achieving students, especially the boys who might be very good at learning key facts via a game. There are three main ways that you can use them. Game 1 involves getting students to read out the key words until the other guesses the topic correctly. Game 2 involves additional challenge and stretch by getting students to describe the topic without using any of the key words on the card. The third game, which adds an additional layer of fun or challenge involves playing a round of Pictionary or Charades. I normally give my students 3 minutes of each round to help activate the learning and warm up the class. You could also have a freestyle round where students decide which game they want to play linked to their learning style. If you are trying to engage some under achieving boys, add some competition and get them to keep score in the back of their books. I would recommend printing them off on card and getting your students to cut them out. Then put the cards into an envelope for class use. If you are a student then keep them in your pocket and use them as a flash card to help you learn the key facts, If there is a term that you do not understand then as your teacher or do some extra research. From a revision perspective, you can print off the cards and get your students to learn the key words for a test or for their exams. These are a win, win resource. This clever little card sort can be used as a starter or plenary exercise on the impact of the Norman invasion of Britain in 1066 Students have two headings and have to cut out the cards and sort them under one of two headings, Britain before the Norman invasion and Britain after the invasion. For more able students I have included an extension exercise or discussion point for the class asking them to assess whether life for ordinary people improved or got worse after the invasion. If you have an especially bright group, you could ask them to create a key to identify which cards were to do with religion, money, society or power.
