This beautifully illustrated market place activity has been designed to help students understand how and why the design of castles changed during the Medieval period. It looks at the arms race between castle builders and defenders and explains how each side tried to outwit the other through changes in design and tactic. This fun and interactive lesson has been tried, tested and refined in the classroom over many years by experienced teachers. It is suitable for the full ability range and includes additional activities to the market place task, which can be mixed and matched to suit your curriculum time and students.
There are a number of different ways to deliver a market place activity. This resource has a mixture of activities that are designed to be a proactive lesson to get students up, moving around and working collaboratively. If you are not comfortable with that, they can always get them to pass the information slides around the classroom. This outstanding literacy lesson has been designed by experienced history teachers at the History Academy to help students understand why the Normans built Square Keep Castles. It forms part of a series of lessons on why the Normans built castles, which can be downloaded and purchased from our TES Shop or from the bundled link below. However, this lesson will run alongside any main stream resources on Norman castles and can be adapted to suit any similar buildings in your local historical environment.
The teaching model for this lesson to at first draw upon students prior knowledge about formal letters, persuasive techniques, Motte & Bailey and Square Keep Castles. The activities in the PowerPoint are designed to build upon this knowledge in preparation for students assessing three different letters that I have included in the pack. These letters should be printed off along with the assessment criteria grid that I have included along with various templates and writing frames for writing formal and persuasive letters.
It is always a good idea to ask your English department about what techniques they use with your students for this type of writing exercise so that you can achieve the best results with your students.
Once your students have assessed the three letters that I have included, o dubious quality, they can then have a go at drafting their own responses and then finishing them off for homework. These can then be assessed using your whole school marking policy for peer assessment and my assessment criteria grid at the start of the next lesson. They can then have ago at redrafting or typing them up and again finishing them off for homework.
The whole thing should take two lessons, but that depends upon how much lesson time you have. Once finished these letters make excellent display work as you can see from the photographs that I have included. I usually get my students to age their letters

This great diamond 9 activity has been designed to help students assess the different factors which helped the RAF win the Battle of Britain in 1940. It can be used to help prepare students for an assessment or to extend their critical thinking skills and understanding of the topic. It is designed to be used with the higher range of ability students and to work alongside any main stream text book or video on this topic. The resource includes nine diamond shaped cards which include one of the key reason why the RAF won the Battle of Britain. Once students have cut the cards out, they are set three tasks including:
Remove any problems that you don’t think are important. Record and explain why you have removed them.
Arrange the remaining diamonds to show any links that you can find between them. Record and explain your reasons.

This lesson could be used as an introduction into a unit of work on medieval castles or to provide a quick overview as part of the theme on how did William keep control. If you are looking for a lesson which ticks all the boxes on collaborative learning then this beautifully illustrated market place activity on the Home Front during the First World War is designed to help students assess both its significance as well as how civilians were affected by the war. This is a great engaging lesson which will help to enhance your teachers toolkit and get your students talking for weeks and doing extra projects.
As you can see from the detailed preview slides, the tasks and activities have been written to appeal to the full spectrum of ability and have been set up around the market place activity where the key slides in the PP are printed off and either pinned on the classroom walls or set out on the tables so that students move around and fill in their information on the summary sheet. This is a very proactive lesson designed to get students up, moving around, sharing and working collaboratively. As an additional layer of differentiation, I have ragged or traffic lighted the information slides to help direct students. Once students have gathered the information together they can either share it in a class discussion or answer a series of question, create a mind map or attempt an extended writing task.
