If like me, you love teaching this topic but sometimes find it difficult sorting through the evidence with your SEND and lower ability students, then look no further for help is at hand in this outstanding card sort which simply summaries the evidence into a series of statements that can be sorted under one of two headings. This resource will work along side any mainstream text book, but if you wish you can also download my accompanying worksheet. However, the PowerPoint that I have include comes with everything that you will need.
The lesson comes in two sections. The first looks at the traditional story of the Gunpowder Pot as it has been taught to school children for hundreds of years. I have created a series of questions and activities aimed at foundation and core students that helps them to study an old Victorian school history book version. This is a great exercise to help students appreciate how history has been taught in the past.
The next section looks a the revisionist version of the Gunpowder Plot and gives students a series of contemporary sources and secondary research by historians to help them decide whether Guy Fawkes was innocent or guilty. Once you have reviewed this sources, your students should then be ready to have ago at the card sort . This can be consolidated by getting them to write an extended answer or completing one of the plenary tasks that I have included in the PowerPoint.

This fun and interactive lesson looks at the story of Queen Boudica’s Rebellion. The main activity is a card sort is designed to help students understand the key events and chronology surrounding the life if Queen Boudica. The information in the card sort is designed to run along side any main stream text book or video clip on her story, but I have also provided a detailed PowerPoint to accompany the card sort.
I originally designed this activity as a starter / plenary for my lower ability Year 7 students studying the Roman Empire, but I have written the information cards so that could be easily accessed by lower ability students at KS2. I have also uploaded it into Word document so you can differentiate it further if you need to suit the individual needs of your students.

It looks at the mystery surrounding the curse of King Tut or if you prefer the 'Mummy’s Curse by looking at the origins of the curse and how it developed in the newspapers after Howard Carter had opened the tomb of Tutankhamun,

This KS3 resource looks at Queen Boudica’s Rebellion in AD 60 - 61. It covers the causes, events and consequences of what during her attempt to overthrow the Roman conquest of Britain. It is aimed at middle to upper ability students, but also contains differentiated tasks which are also suitable for SEND and KS2 students.

The aim of this resource is explain why the USA introduced a policy of isolationism from 1919 to 1939. The learning objectives are as follows:
Know: What was the US Policy of isolationism from 1919 – 1941
Understand: Why did the USA follow a policy of isolationism?
Analyse: What impact did this policy have on both domestic and international relations?
What Am I Looking For?
Identify and Describe: the US policy of isolationism and its effects
Explain: why the USA introduced isolationism and its effects
Analyse: What were the consequences of the US policy of isolationism and come to a judgement on which was the most significant?
The starter is a snowballing activity, instructions included. The first part of the presentation then looks at the impact of the First World War and the Treaty of Versailles in the US decision not to sign it or it or join the League of Nations. This is then backed up with a consolidation exercise of a past paper question with a pupil mark scheme which can be easily adapted for peer and self assessment.
The next part of the presentation then looks at 6 key consequences of the US policy of isolationism by looking in outline at economic isolationism, immigration controls, Prohibition, the 'Red Scare', Great Depression and the causes of the Second World War.
The plenary activity focuses on a thinking skills review triangle, which aims to get students to decide which consequence is the most significant. I have also included a homework activity and some notes with the slides.
This resources really well along side my worksheet on US isolation which you can download and buy separately or as bundle with this presentation. Both can be used independently.

This resource explores the issue of why the USA adopted a policy of isolationism in 1920. It looks at the impact of the First World War, new immigration, Republican Policies, the Red Scare and rising racial intolerance in helping to create a toxic atmosphere in which politicians decided to prevent the USA from getting involved in international disputes. It also makes links this decision to isolate the USA to other changes such as decisions to introduce tariffs, prohibition and immigration control.
I would use this resource with core and advanced students. The activities include note taking, summary diagrams and a past paper question with a assessment or learning mark scheme do that students can peer or self assess their answers.

This outstanding resource has been designed for Black History Month and focuses on the achievements of Black People in the American West. The resource can easily be adapted for display purposes but it is designed to be used as a collaborative market place activity.
This beautifully illustrated resource is a must have for anyone teaching this topic. The tasks and activities have been written to appeal to the full spectrum of ability and have been set up around the market place activity where the key slides in the PP are printed off and either pinned on the classroom walls or set out on the tables so that students move around and fill in their information on the summary sheet. This is a very proactive lesson designed to get students up, moving around, sharing and working collaboratively. I have provided two different summary sheets to help provide weaker students with more structure when recording their research.
The information in the market place activity looks at nine individuals from a cross section of society and the roles they played in the American West. These include mountain men, pioneers, businessmen, Native American Chiefs, lawmen, law makers, soldiers, preachers and cowboys. The aim is to provide students with an alternative positive perspective of the achievements of black people, which is often overlooked in traditional text books. The starters and plenaries are designed to help students to draw upon their prior knowledge and question whose story is being told. I have deliberately focused on the achievements of black men to help set up the plenary so that students can think about 'Herstory' and other perspectives and the purpose of history.

Captain Cook reputation continues to be very controversial. At the time he was seen as a man of science, an explorer, a great navigator and adventurer. His death at the hands of the native people of Hawaii turned him into a martyr who died for the British Empire. However, in our post colonial times, his reputation has been called into question by people who suffered as a result of his actions. Historians are interested in these debates as they question the role and purpose of history and whose story we are telling in the classroom. Other counter that it is wrong to question the reputation of great men like Captain Cook as they didn’t have the benefit of hindsight and couldn’t foresee the consequences of their actions.
This innovative and creative activity has been designed to help students assess the reputation of Captain Cook and decide whether he was a Colonial Hero or an Imperialist Villain. This activity involves giving students a card sort with sixteen statements to sort through and decide which statement they support. Once this has been complete, students can then have a go at answering the question: How far was Captain Cook a hero or a villain?’ They could do this in a project, an essay, or they could take sides and write a speech arguing either side. I have included links to two video clips, including the BBC Timewatch video. After they have completed the card sort, students could add facts to either side of the debate. Ultimately, this resource is highly adaptable and can easily be adapted to suit a wide range of learners.

This great resource is designed to be used as a writing frame to help support middle and lower ability students scaffold an extended answer or essay on why did the Liberals introduce their reforms 1906 - 1911.
The first resource is a card sort which has four heading cards labelled social reformers, political rivalry, new liberalism and national efficiency, as well as 16 statement / information cards to be correct sorted under them. The second resource includes a writing frame on page 1 with the same headings set out using the PEE guide - Point - Example Explain. This page should ideally be printed on A3 paper for SEN students. The second page includes a thinking skills review triangle activity to help your students plan their conclusion and decide which was the most important factor.

This outstanding diamond 9 activity has been designed to provide stretch and challenge for students studying why the USSR and Germany signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact in 1939. The key theory underpinning this type of strategy is that when we rank items, either statements, objects or images, we are required to make explicit the over- arching relationships by which we organise our knowledge and connect our learning. It can be used as a starter, plenary, revision or as a focus for an assessment activity. If you are looking for something more suitable for lower and middle ability then please check out my card sort matching exercise on this topic.
The resource includes nine diamond shaped cards which include a range of factors which explain why Germany and the USSR signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact in 1939. The document is provided in Microsoft Word so you can edit the resource if you wish to customise it further by changing any of the key factors that I have included. Once students have cut out the cards out they are set three tasks including:
1. Remove any reasons that you don’t think are important. Record and explain why you have removed them.
2. Arrange the remaining diamonds to show any links that you can find between the different reasons. Record and explain your reasons.
3. Make a smaller diamond shape using the four most important reasons to explain why Germany and the USSR signed the Nazi-Soviet Pact? Record and explain the reasons for your choices.
At each stage students should be feeding back to their group or the class and explaining their choices. The discussion and explanation around the choices that they have made are critical in helping them develop their thinking skills skills as well as their understanding of the topic.
