A lesson that explores how to use personification in fiction writing. A short starter activity allows pupils the opportunity to explore various methods of including personification in their writing. Pupils are then given the opportunity to choose from a selection of items to personify. Includes a worked example to help assist pupils. The lesson culminates in a peer assessment activity to reduce teacher marking!

A fiction writing lesson that helps pupils identify ways to include the senses in their writing to make it as vivid as possible. Links to the film trailer, a short extract, senses grid and glossary are also included to help with differentiation. My class particularly enjoyed being able to engage with the topic of war in a variety of different ways and some rich whole class discussion prior to the main activity of continuing the narrative proved extremely powerful!

A lesson to explore characterisation through an examination of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Lots of opportunities for pupils to share and discuss ideas prior to writing. An extract exploring the dual nature of the infamous protagonist is used to spark discussion and compliment contextual information associated with Victorian Edinburgh. Pupils are then prompted to focus their writing to address some mini success criteria. There is also a worked example as a starting point!

A lesson that is ideal to link with any of the ghosts, however, I found it worked particularly well with the introduction of Marley's ghost in stave one. There are lots of opportunities for speaking and listening skills to be developed as pupils explore the Victorians' thoughts on all things supernatural thus addressing A03 (context).

A lesson that focuses on the power of language! The starter activity helps to develop pupils' understanding of the treatment of children to add to their contextual knowledge of the novella (A03). The lesson then develops to explore what makes language powerful by exploring an infamous Charlie Chaplin speech before culminating in a persuasive writing activity that draws heavily upon context (A03). My class particularly loved being able to read their persuasive speeches to the class at an old fashioned lectern! This lesson could be extended over two by completing a speaking and listening feedback session on speeches that are shared with the class.

A lesson that explores the allegorical aspects of the novella in relation to stave one. Lots of opportunities for pupils to engage in speaking and listening activities whilst also exploring the symbolic nature of the characters contained in the opening of the text. From my experience, this lesson has helped pupils to understand the significance of more peripheral characters whilst also allowing them to discuss A03 (context) more confidently.

A simple and chunked lesson that steadily builds on pupils' skills to develop their confidence - particularly well suited to lower ability students. All resources are differentiated with different levels of challenge for pupils to choose from and provide them with extra ownership over their learning. Whole class discussions and readings can take place within this lesson to provide checks on learning whilst there is also a focus on modelling to ensure pupils are provided with some additional support for more difficult tasks like selecting and retrieving appropriate quotations.

Pupils are introduced to the Cratchit family in this chunked lesson perfect for lower ability pupils. They are challenged to think about what the celebration of Christmas represents to them before sharing in a whole class discussion which is perfect to explore lower ability pupils' ideas. A shared reading takes place before pupils are challenged to demonstrate their ability to select and retrieve key information from the text.

Pupils explore the character and symbolic significance of the Ghost of Christmas Past in this chunked lesson perfect for lower ability students. Pupils are introduced to the cultural and symbolic relevance of the character before engaging in an analysis of the language used in relation to the Ghost of Christmas Past. Later pupils have the chance to demonstrate their creative skills whilst also working on their ability to select and retrieve appropriate quotations to support their ideas.

A chunked lesson which allows lower ability pupils the chance to explore the character of Marley in relation to the gothic elements of the text. Pupils work in pairs to analyse a popular image of Marley before they explore the many elements that feature in traditional gothic texts and are also present in this passage of A Christmas Carol. Pupils then work on the selected extract to delve into language which fits the gothic genre.

A chunked lesson for lower ability pupils that allows them to explore the character of Scrooge as he is initially portrayed in the text. All resources are included which feature plenty of differentiation to allow pupils to gain support and challenge depending upon their individual ability. Lots of modelling also takes place and there is plenty of scope for discussion which proves very popular when consolidating the ideas of lower ability pupils.

A simple and chunked lesson for lower ability pupils that steadily works on developing their existing knowledge before applying it to the text of A Christma Carol. Pupils listen to Firework by Katy Perry to identify similes in action before exploring Dickens' use of similes as a class through a modelled response. Later pupils are challenged to complete their own independent analysis with the help of scaffolded material.

A lesson that explores the complexities of Ralph and Piggy's friendship. Pupils are engaged in a wide variety of activities which help them to explore an extract and what it reveals about these key characters independently before completing an initial piece of analysis on Piggy and Ralph. Pupils later complete a PEEZL paragraph plan which is then swapped with another member of the class thus testing their planning skills.

A simple and chunked lesson which encourages lower ability pupils to explore language at word level through a series of activities based around the device of foreshadowing. A scaffolded worksheet, extract and modelled example are all included to support pupils' learning.

A simple and chunked lesson to introduce lower ability pupils to the Roald Dahl classic The Landlady. Pupils explore key words in a settler word search before demonstrating their existing knowledge and ability to extract information about the author himself. Depending upon ability pupil are challenged to read a brief extract from the text independently but this could of course be changed to paired, group or a whole class reading if more support is required. Following this, pupils engage in a quiz based upon the extract to introduce an element of competition and encourage them to select and retrieve appropriate information before developing their confidence with quotation retrieval. Where possible, extra challenges have been built in to further stretch more able pupils.

An independent lesson where pupils work in small teams to select and retrieve appropriate information from the pick-pocketing scene from chapter 10 of Oliver Twist. Pupils then use this information to create a newspaper report about the incident. All resources included!

This session was delivered over a three hour period to prospective year 6 students along with high ability year 7 students. This allowed new pupils to engage with their older peers and get an understanding of life at high school in a fun and interactive way. Pupils are introduced to one another through some simple but effective ice-breaker tasks before exploring a myth or legend from a specific culture allowing excellent links to SMSC to be made. Pupils then work together to delve into language and higher level vocabulary before creating their very own myth or legend. The resources and accompanying workbook are included! This could easily be broken down into 3/4 lessons to be delivered in the classroom and may prove an excellent starting point for pupils who are engaging with a myths and legends scheme.
