This lesson is designed to either coincide with Organ Donation Week in September or fit in with your general LifeSkills/PSHE programme. This resource is a lesson on the value of language learning for the UK economy and beyond. It includes discussion points and could be used to inspire students to contemplate MOOCs in a language or language courses at university. This short presentation introduces students to Sofonisba Anguissola, an accomplished woman painter from the 16th/17th century. At a time when men dominated the professional art world, Sofonisba made a career at the Spanish court and beyond, was mentored by Michelangelo and blazed a trail as a leading portrait painter. This presentation could support Gatsby Benchmarks 3 and 4 and demonstrates what dedication in the face of obstacles can achieve.

This resource is designed to coincide with World Rivers Day in September, but in recognition that this is a busy time of year could fit in with other parts of your Careers/PSHE programme. It deals with looking at careers and job sectors based around rivers and opening students up to the idea of considering their work environment and that jobs they may have considered can be applied in multiple settings. It includes teaching notes with a link to duplicate a short preliminary survey on Forms, a printable bingo card to link to the presentation on jobs and job sectors and a printable Exit Ticket to check understanding.

This presentation could be used to promote women in science/STEM, accompany work on the composition of stars or generally inspire and demonstrate what women can achieve. It could contribute to Gatsby Benchmark 4. It is a brief introduction to the career of Cecilia Payne, who made some of the most fundamental discoveries regarding stars, including that their composition was predominantly Hydrogen, very much against the popular belief of the day that stars had a similar composition to the Earth. This is part of our Women in History collection.

This lesson is about raising that awareness and looks at why there needs to be an awareness month and provides opportunities for discussion around fundraising for charities, preventative meaures, the value of exercise and how to make it possible and even looks at considering working in this area and looking at related courses. It reminds that this is not just a female issue and the value of early detection. This resource is designed to coincide with Smile Day on 6 October, but could be adapted to fit in elsewhere in your sixth form programme. It would very much complement our Is Kindness the New Superpower lesson. The lesson includes opportunities to discuss the power of a smile and the personal right to smile or not, as well as introducing the notion of the positive aspects of acts of kindness. This lesson could be used for World Financial Planning Day on 4 October or more generally in your sixth form/college scheme to introduce the idea of Financial Planning . This lesson looks at the importance of financial planning, considering when to start, whether it is best to save or pay off loans, a brief introduction to ISAs, finding out more about savings accounts. It includes various discussion points and an activity on Needs V Wants to help students consider what their priorities are. It could be followed up by more detailed lessons on individual points or input from bank/building society or financial adviser on particular areas of interest.

This presentation is designed to coincide with Global Entrepreneurship Week, but could also be used as part of your careers programme and could be an ideal precursor to welcoming a talk from a local entrepreneur. It involves students researching a chosen entrepreneur, so they will require access to the internet. The teaching notes include a link to a preliminary quiz and there are printable worksheets to support discussion and research activities. The teaching notes and Ppt also include suggestions of further activities or links to share with students.

This lesson was put together with World Sight Day in mind, but could be used at any juncture in your programme. It deals with understanding around eye health, how to protect your eyes at work and study and consideration of careers around eye health.
