With Japan in mind because of the upcoming Olympic Games, here is an 8 minute long demonstration video showing students how they can produce a Japanese Manga style drawing portrait. This activity engages students in a range of creative processes - firstly then need a photo of themselves. They are then shown how to exaggerate features and simplify shapes in the style of Manga. Then they are shown a graphite transfer process to move the image onto paper and develop an exciting background. Finally they are shown how to develop the image using ink. The video is completely self explanatory. All you need to provide is paper, pencils (or graphite sticks), felt pens and biros. Ideal as an hour long stand alone activity, or as the start to a wider project on Japanese popular culture. The video is 7 minutes long and includes a visual demonstration, a verbal explanation, images and music.
