Put up a PowerPoint with pictures of various branded snacks, video games, television shows, movies, etc and get the students to use their knowledge of the language along with these crib sheets to engage in debates; expressing their opinions, agreeing and disagreeing with one another.
There are three KS 3 sheets. Level 1 for Year 7, Level 2 for Year 8, Level 3 for Year 9, or can be used most specifically for differentiation within year groups. There is also a higher level, more mature sheet aimed at GCSE students.

We were lucky enough to have access to a library with a large basement beneath it and students
split into two groups and communicated using walkie-talkies provided by the school. This added to
the drama — we had a drama student teacher dressed up as a monster and the students in the
basement used torches to navigate from task to task, trying to complete activities within a given
time or risk one member of the team being ‘caught’ by the monster and given a short time out.
It can be easily adapted to work within a classroom, with the ‘research’ group sitting around a table with
dictionaries, ready to assist the group completing the tasks.
