It also provides a strategy for working with elapsed time. Readin’ ‘Round the Clock supports students working with the relationship between the hour hand and the minute hand. Numbers around the Face is a game that helps students first learn the numbers on the clock. These activities are also suited for students who have challenges with learning and need the extra support. Tangrams, those seven simple geometric pieces, are a manipulative that can support diverse topics with students at all levels. This dissection puzzle can offer many challenges to students. The seven tans can be manipulated into various shapes, pictures, letters, etc. Tangram shapes and puzzles support the development of various geometric topics while building spatial reasoning and problem solving. Fractions are a natural fit with tangrams as is area and linear measurement. This 31 page packet includes: literacy connections and ideas for creating tangrams as well as discussion prompts to use as students are creating a tangram; Ideas for investigating shapes and discussion prompts to use as students are investigating shapes; Ideas for using tangrams to study fractions and discussion prompts to use as students are working with fractions and tangrams; art activity suggestions and resources; and several extensions with resources. Writing is one of the parts of language that students are still developing along with their reading, talking, and listening skills. For some students what they know about mathematics may exceed their ability to communicate it through the written word. Students learn to write by writing. Writing needs to be original thought, not just copying something that someone else wrote. As the teacher, providing an environment that is rich in mathematical language is a priority. Providing students a Journey’s Notebook, if for nothing else but the development of a Glossary and a Journal, offers a place where students can record their thoughts and experiences as it chronicles their growth over time while on their educational journey. Writing About can be a small group writing activity or an individual activity. This is a good activity for struggling students and ESL/ELL who may need some support in writing. Writing about this week’s topic provides students an opportunity to reflect on their work over the past week. Parents and caregivers find this very informative and it provides a way for them to stay in touch with what is happening in the classroom. This can also be used as a formative assessment probe for the student. This resource is good for children with Dyslexia and language-based learning deficiencies. Writing is one of the parts of language that younger mathematicians are still developing along with their reading, talking, and listening skills. Children learn to write by writing. Writing needs to be original thought, not just copying something that someone else wrote. Therefore, it is imperative that opportunities are provided often for students to engage in writing about mathematics. As the teacher, providing an environment that is rich in mathematical language is a priority. Writing About offers a collaborative opportunity for small groups of students to work individually first to write about a concept and then to come together and putting their individual work into a paragraph about the topic. A word cloud is given as a prompt for words and ideas. Facilitation notes are provided as well as student activity sheet. This is a good activity for struggling students and ESL/ELL who may need some support in writing.

NCTM describes “representation” as referring to both a process and a product. So mathematical representations include all the different ways that students depict their thinking as well as the processes they use to put their thinking into those forms. Representations have often been taught as an end in and of themselves, most as essential elements in supporting students’ understanding. When students gain access to mathematical representations and the ideas they express they acquire a set of tools that significantly expand their capacity to model and interpret physical, social, and mathematical phenomena. The place value activity takes two- and three-digit numbers and represents them through a concrete manipulative, the written symbol, a verbal symbol, a diagram, picture, graph, drawing, or table, and an algebraic representation with a mathematical sentence. There is also a contextual problem for the students to work through. There are six sets of cards, each with 6 representations with facilitation notes. The fraction activity takes common fractions and represents them through a concrete manipulative, a verbal symbol, a fraction model, a number line representation, and a symbolic representation. Venn diagrams offer a way to look at relationships between logical sets or mathematical sets. The circles are the sets, the elements are listed in their respective circles, and if there is an overlap, that region signifies the intersection of the sets. Venns can also be nested, when sets are subsets of each other. A variety of Venns have been provided. There are basic, two circle that are configured to be folded and used in The Mathematicians’ Notebook or Journey’s Notebook. There are also three circle Venns and sorting ovals for nested Venns. By the intermediate grades, students have had many experiences with both 2D and 3D geometric objects. Their studies become more sophisticated as they are describing and classifying shapes based upon their attributes. They are also working with perimeter, area, and volume. Student reasoning, discussion, writing, and argumentation should be expected to show this more sophisticated level of understanding. However, some students may still need some review on the basic geometric figures and their attributes. Geometry in the intermediate grades should be just as experiential as it was in the primary years. Students are better able to articulate their findings and justifications for their spatial reasoning investigations. These five activities offer literacy connections, opportunities for writing, extensions and adaptations for diverse learners, money connections, and suggestions for the Art teacher in supporting mathematics.
