For the last day of the 12 Day of Mathematics, secondary students will look the abundance of gifts that were given over the course of the 12 days. They will calculate the total number of gifts given in all! And they will think of questions that might be raised when working on their calculations. Eleven is the first “teen” number beginning mathematicians encounter. Today’s activity employs children’s literature and manipulatives. If possible, use the children’s book 12 Ways to Get to 11 by Eve Merriam. Have Cuisenaire rods, unifix cubes, or other manipulatives on hand for students as needed. Based upon the individual needs of your children show them the title and allow them to work in pairs to see how many of the 12 ways they can discover to make 11. Alternatively, as you read the story allow the children time to model the various compositions of 11 that are shown in the story. Encourage children to use various representations for their models – drawings, words, equations, sketches of their manipulative models, etc. This activity is good for students with dyslexia and language-based learning deficiencies. For secondary students I am taking this opportunity to share one of my favorite problems from a famous historical mathematics document: The 9 Chapters on Mathematical Art.

There are problems from history that can serve today’s secondary mathematicians well. One such problem comes from The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art, written in the 3rd C. AD. It is as important a mathematical source as Euclid’s compilation, Elements. Where Elements influenced Western mathematics, Nine Chapters influenced the mathematics of China. It serves as a rich source of contextual problems to challenge today’s young mathematicians. Excerpts can be found in Google books among other places. This problem is from Chapter 9, Problem 20. The accompanying power point has facilitation notes. This resource includes a PDF with description, the Nine Chapters Problem, and PDF of Power Point. Students can spend a lot of time “tinkering with” the triangle as they discover more and more patterns. For the seventh day students will be investigating patterns. If you think this activity is too challenging for your students to do with paper and pencil, they can use a calculator as a tool of investigation. Or head over to the K3 activity and check it out – it is all about calendar math. Students will investigate patterns that occur when dividing by 7. The investigation is framed in working with fractions whose denominators are 7. Most people are familiar with the patterns formed by dividing by 9 but have not had much experience with the dividing by 7. Day 7 provides the opportunity for younger mathematicians to investigate patterns on the calendar. There are a series of tasks that can be posed. The current December 2015 calendar is used but this activity can be easily adapted for any calendar month. There is also a place for the children to create their own riddles that can be saved and used later for centers and learning stations. Rooster's Off to See the World, by Eric Carle, is a beloved children’s book. Not only does the story engage children it can also serve as a foundation for many mathematical investigations for primary mathematicians. The following 90+ pages with 23 activities are a sample of the possible uses for these materials in the primary mathematics classroom. These activities are flexible enough to be used for leveled instruction in the primary grades, even into early intermediate grades. A second grader who is still struggling with counting can benefit from the counting activities denoted with kindergarten standards. Many of these activities can be first introduced in small or large group instruction and then rotate out to a center or learning station. One interesting and important concept in mathematics is Pascal’s Triangle. The combination of Rooster's Off to See the World and the related mathematical concepts that can be found in Pascal’s Triangle allows students a fun, unique, and engaging venue for developing mathematical literacy. The main focus standards from the CCSSM have been identified at the beginning of each cluster of activities. Notice that for many of the activities the standards transcend two or all three of the primary grades. This was intentional to show the possible development of the learning trajectories for a topic and the possibilities for leveled instruction. Geometry connections although thin are there as well, just not identified as focus standards. Materials are listed for each of the activities. The 93 pages include both black line masters as well as color masters have been provided. Suggestions for preparing the materials have been noted as well to facilitate making classroom sets for long term use.
