The number two is the next number for the 12 Days of Christmas. Students from kindergarten through high school work with the number two in various formats. Today middle school and high school mathematicians will be investigating powers of two and exponential growth using a well-known piece of children’s literature. Work mats, recording sheets, and a Multiple Representation Frayer for are provided. Opportunities for writing, listening, and being a mathematician are given.
Day seven provides an opportunity for secondary students to look at one of the classic problems in mathematics: The Seven Bridges of Königsberg.

Five golden rings inspire tasks that involve writing about circles to working with circles. There are several options depending upon the needs of your students.
• The first task is writing about what makes zero special. Zero is framed in a circle as a visual prompt for students to think about a circle not having any sides.
• The second task has students going on a “Circle Hunt”.
• The third task has students using circle counters to decorate a Christmas tree (work mat provided) while composing and decomposing numbers. Facilitation notes for the task are provided .

Place value is the corner stone for building numeracy. Having a base ten mat that shows the verbal – both the place value and the name for the manipulative, the numerical, as well as the pictorial helps students build stronger connections and deepen their understanding as they work with place value.
