This engaging and thought-provoking triple-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of the chapters 14 to 16 of Emma Carroll’s 'Secrets of a Sun King.’ In this section of the text, the children find Kyky’s heart within the canopic jar. They also reach Egypt, and attempt to return the jar to its burial place in the Valley of Kings. The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through: -Retrieving information; -Inferring and deducing hidden meanings; -Analysing the writer’s use of language. The sessions include a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference, explanation and deeper thinking activities. A clear, colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides students through the learning. In addition to this, a ‘Writing to Describe’ helpsheet is provided for the creative activity. There’s a lot in the session (21 slides in total) so I would recommend breaking into two or even three lessons. This engaging and informative lesson helps students to understand the social and historical context of ‘freak shows’ in order to aid their reading of Darren Shan’s ‘Cirque Du Freak.’ Students gather knowledge about when, where, and how freak shows operated, and apply this understanding to the text. They then form and write their own arguments regarding whether they believe freak shows should be allowed. There are easily enough resources for 2-3 lessons here. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: - Reading and understanding information about the history of freak shows; - Answering comprehension questions and creating a timeline to demonstrate their understanding; - Reading selected extracts from the text, in order to link ideas regarding context and text together; - Forming and writing a fair and balanced argument, using a model example and a helpsheet, about whether they think freak shows should be legal; - Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts; Included is: - Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; - Information Text - Freak Shows - Extract from ‘Cirque Du Freak’ - Chapters 2 and 8; - Timeline Template; - Balanced Argument Worksheet; - Writing to Argue Help-sheet - Comprehensive lesson plan. By the end of the lesson, students are able to understand which features should go into a travel writing piece, and use strategies to enable them to write in appropriate depth for the needs of purpose, audience, and form. The lesson follows a clear, logical, bite-size learning journey, which guides students towards differentiated learning objectives. Over the course of this journey, they become able to: - Define what travel writing is, and understand why it is an important and popular genre; - Think beyond the obvious, noticing and describing subliminal and periphery features, in addition to those which they deem as most important and pressing; - Consider how stimulus can be described using each of the different senses; - Use a success criteria to analyse a model travel writing attempt, and to plan their own; - Self/Peer assess travel writing attempts. These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s comprehension skills when reading a range of texts related to the theme of natural disasters. The three sessions include the extracts/ texts and presentations for the whole class reading sessions on: -Fiction - Escape from Pompeii - Christina Balit -Non-Fiction - Tsunamis -Poetry - Blessing - Imtiaz Dharker The extracts/ texts needed for each session are included. Each session contains a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. There is also a vocabulary check immediately after each extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children in upper KS2 and lower KS3, although with minor adaptations they could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.
