Around the World in 32 Sentences - Descriptive Writing Challenge!
‘Around the World in 32 Sentences’ is a fun and interesting way to enable students to build their descriptive writing skills, whilst also developing their understanding of the world around them. Transporting students on a journey to a multitude of different settings around the world, the resources break down extended writing by providing comprehensive, informative subject matter material and differentiated challenge outcomes. This aids them in constructing a larger, more substantial piece of writing over the course of the task, based on their travels around the world!
In each of the world destinations, students are provided with ‘Bronze’, ‘Silver’, and ‘Gold’ challenges, to stretch learners of all abilities. Furthermore, children who require additional support can access the task using the handy writing template and descriptive writing help-sheets, both of which are provided within the resource pack. Assessment for Learning is utilised throughout, with success criterion provided for students to peer assess both before and after the main task.

This thought-provoking, stimulating lesson enables students to build their knowledge of the content, language, and structure of Thomas Hardy’s pessimistic love/relationships poem ‘Neutral Tones.’ In particular, students learn how the poet’s adoption of a pessimistic tone aids the communication of his key messages about love. The lesson also refers to key contextual information about the poet, referring to both his experiences and his beliefs.
Students learn through a logical and step-by-step learning journey, including:
-Inferring and predicting information through the title of the poem;
-Understanding key contextual information about the poet and his life;
-Reading and interpreting the poem;
-Understanding the poem, with a particular emphasis upon the content, language, and structural features;
-Writing an extended analysis piece based upon the poet’s use of content, language, and structure to get across his key messages;
-Peer assessing their partners’ analysis attempts.

Macbeth: Macduff!
This engaging and interesting lesson aims to improve students’ understanding of one of the key characters in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth: Macduff. In particular, they learn to make insightful interpretations about the character, and are enabled to to infer and deduce Macduff’s key characteristics from his involvement at particular moments in the play, in addition to considering how Shakespeare deploys Macduff as a fitting hero to face Macbeth’s tyranny.
The lesson utilises a range of tasks, that require students to be visual and interactive learners. It follows this learning journey:
Inferring key information about the character of Macduff from events in the text;
Identifying and ordering the key events in the text in which Macduff is involved;
Understanding his role in the downfall of Macbeth;
Understanding his character in relation to historical context, considering Shakespeare’s intentions through the character;
Analysing Shakespeare’s development of Macduff as a key character throughout the text;
Evaluating the learning in the lesson.

Great Expectations: Mr and Mrs Joe Gargery!
This engaging and informative lesson enables students to make detailed and precise interpretations of the introduction and development of the characters of Mr and Mrs Joe Gargery in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. In particular, students learn about how Pip perceives the two characters at different points throughout the text, and consider the messages that Dickens hoped to get across through the character development and plot events related to Mr and Mrs Joe.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
Identifying the character traits of Mr and Mrs Joe;
Reading and comprehending sections of the text in which Mr and Mrs Joe’s characters are introduced and developed;
