These 16-page resource booklets contain a wide range of challenging and engaging comprehension activities to aid the teaching of 9 different poems from other cultures. Teachers have found the activities particularly useful throughout practicing for unseen poems, for teaching as part of a poetry unit, or to support guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of students towards meeting the key English Literature assessment objectives - suitable for all examining bodies. Students have found these resources extremely engaging, and it is clearly highlighted within each task regarding which assessment strands the task is designed to demonstrate. Each booklet is provided in both Word (to allow for easy editing) and PDF (to ensure for consistency of formatting between computers). Activities across the booklets are as consistent, to provide an equal understanding of each poem, and include (amongst many others): ‘Analysing Context’ - helping students to ‘Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written.’ ‘Analysing Subject Matter, Language and Structure’ - to help students to ‘Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate.’ ‘Diary Entry’ - to help students to ‘Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation. Seven Natural Wonders Descriptive Writing Challenge - Lesson Bundle!

These highly engaging and purposeful lessons aim to develop a number of important creative writing skills, whilst towards an extended descriptive piece based on the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of the World.’ The lessons are sequenced thoughtfully, progressing children from their initial word level ideas, through sentence level construction, to whole-text composition. The lessons included are: Building Base Vocabulary Using the Senses Descriptive Devices Fronted Adverbials Whole Text Cohesion and Connectives Editing and Redrafting. The lessons also build children’s understanding of each of the seven natural wonders, which links well to geography/ environmental cross-curricular study. Included are each of the clear, eye-catching, comprehensive PowerPoint presentations (these will guide you through the step-by-step journey for each lesson), the worksheets/templates needed for the main activities, and the structure strip for the extended writing piece (all provided in both Word and PDF). In the past, I have used these lessons with children in lower KS2 (years 3 and 4) - the key learning is aligned with curriculum expectations for writing. All images are licensed for commercial use.

These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills, through reading a range of informative and age-appropriate non-fiction texts. The texts include an appropriate mix of topical/ current affairs-type news stories and more uplifting, light-hearted articles: -The Russia-Ukraine War; -Climate Change; -The World’s Oldest Land Animal; -Alyssa’s Revolutionary Cancer Treatment; -Sebbie Hall’s Random Acts of Kindness; -The Increasing World Population. The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the text is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The PowerPoint presentations guide teachers and students through each of the thought-provoking activities. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The texts have been downloaded and reformatted as PDF and Word documents for ease of use, but the link for each original source is also provided on the first slide of the respective PowerPoint presentation. The sessions are best suited for children across key stage 2 (particularly years 4-6) although with minor adaptations they could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.

This ‘The Iron Man’ lesson bundle contains all of ‘The Iron Man’ lessons, which aid students in developing a secure understanding of each of the chapters: -Chapter 1: The Coming of the Iron Man -Chapter 2: The Return of the Iron Man -Chapter 3: What’s to be Done with the Iron Man? -Chapter 4: The Space-Being and the Iron Man -Chapter 5: The Iron Man’s Challenge.
