This resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of William Shakespeare’s ‘Othello.’ Teachers have found them particularly useful in exam revision, comprehension tasks, or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of students towards meeting the KS4 expectations within the new National Curriculum framework - this makes the tasks suitable for all examining bodies. Students have found these resources extremely engaging, and for teachers there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They also relate to key extracts, characters, and themes from the play ensuring that students gain a deep understanding of the text. Activities within the booklet include: ‘Context: Shakespearean Times’ - to aid students with ‘Drawing on knowledge of the purpose, audience and context of the writing, including its social, historical and cultural context and the literary tradition to which it belongs, to inform evaluation;’ ‘Shakespeare’s Description’ - to aid students with ‘Analysing a writer’s choice of vocabulary, form, grammatical and structural features, and evaluating their effectiveness and impact;’ ‘Iago’ and 'Desdemona’ character profiles- to aid students with ‘Seeking evidence in the text to support a point of view, including justifying inferences with evidence;’ ‘Editing the Play’ - to aid students with ‘Making an informed personal response, recognising that other responses to a text are possible and evaluating these.’ Plus many, many more activities (the booklet is around 30 pages in length!) This engaging and informative lesson enables students to make detailed and precise interpretations of the introduction and development of the relationship between Pip and Estella in Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. In particular, students learn about how the two characters feel and act towards one another throughout the novel, linking this to their understanding of context and to Dickens’ key messages about love, morality, and class. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: - Understanding key contextual information about love and courtship; - Reading a key extract introducing their relationship in ‘Great Expectations’ and identifying their behaviour traits towards one another; -Using clues to track their developing relationship throughout the novel; - Analysing the development of their relationship through the novel, considering Dickens’ key messages to the readers; - Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts. Included is: - Whole lesson PowerPoint - colourful and comprehensive; - Analysis template with success criteria for creating well-structured responses; - Estella and Pip text retrieval worksheet; - The necessary extracts to aid the lesson; - Comprehensive lesson plan. This resource is perfect for enabling students to build both their persuasive writing and their speaking and listening skills. Based upon the popular BBC series 'Dragons' Den', students have the opportunity to research, design, pitch, and evaluate arguments for their own inventions, whilst simultaneously analysing persuasive pitches, revising persuasive techniques, structuring arguments and articulating convincingly. Included is a 16 page booklet (I would say at least 4-5 hour lessons of tasks) that lead students to: - Introduce themselves and their interests; - Watch persuasive pitches (links included) and identify persuasive devices; - Analyse why persuasive devices are effective; - Structure an analysis appropriately; - Brainstorm ideas for an invention using imagination and helpful aiding questions; - Formulate an argument by considering key questions and counter arguments; - Write and present a persuasive pitch; - Peer-evaluate and self-evaluate persuasive pitches. I have also provided some examples of news stories featuring the worst and best pitches from the den, in order to provoke discussion about what makes a strong pitch. By the end of the lesson, students demonstrate their knowledge of the text analytically, through assured, appropriate, and sustained interpretations. The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through: Knowledge harvesting what they know about Japan, World War II and kamikaze pilots, developing their contextual understanding to aid their reading of the poem; Reading and interpreting the poem, using a provided line-by-line analysis, and interactive group activities; Developing their understanding through inferring and analysing key language and structural choices; Analysing how the predominant themes are conveyed through Garland’s language and structure choices; Self/ Peer assessing each other’s learning attempts. In this engaging lesson, students develop their understanding of special places in Christianity, Islam and Judaism. It was originally taught as a part of an RE unit on ‘Special Places’ and so assumes some prior knowledge of churches and mosques (I have uploaded the prior lessons on this). The lesson introduces synagogues. The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey: -Knowledge recall - gauging what children already know about special places in Christianity and Islam; -Being introduced to synagogues and their key features; -Using a provided worksheet/ template to find similarities and differences between churches, mosques and synagogues; -Creating their own special places; -Completing a plenary activity to assess their understanding; -Self-reflecting on the extent to which they feel they have met the learning objective. This resource pack includes the comprehensive PowerPoint presentation (23 slides) and the worksheet (provided in both Word and PDF). There is everything that you need here to teach the lesson, but you may wish to have some cardboard, shoeboxes etc. available for the creative task.
