These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s comprehension of several extracts from Roald Dahl texts. There are ten sessions included in total - one session each for the following Roald Dahl texts: -The Witches; -Esio Trot; -George’s Marvellous Medicine; -The Twits; -The Magic Finger; -James and the Giant Peach; -The Enormous Crocodile; -Danny, the Champion of the World -The BFG -Matilda Each presentation contains a link to the relevant online chapters (on the first slide). This is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children in years 2-3, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. This style of whole class reading, in which you are able to dip into a different text each day, is great for broadening the number of texts that children are exposed to and increasing their enthusiasm for reading.
