The sessions include a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference, explanation and deeper thinking activities. A clear, colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides students through the learning. The session ends with a creative activity in which students write Mr Twit’s diary entry after pulling off his greatest trick yet. There’s a lot in the session (19 slides in total) so I would recommend breaking into two lessons. The lessons are most suitable for children in lower key stage 2, (they were originally made for children in year 3) but they could also be adapted for slightly older and younger year groups.

A clear, colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides students through the learning. The lesson also includes an answer key for the retrieval questions, and model answer ideas for the more detailed responses. There’s a lot here (24 slides in total) so I would recommend breaking into two or even three separate lessons. The lessons are suitable for students in either upper KS2 or lower KS3, depending upon the individual context of the school and students. I originally used them with year 5 and 6 children.

This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills whilst reading key extracts from an age-appropriate adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (the pages needed for the lesson are provided). The extract is from the ‘Shakespeare Stories: Romeo and Juliet’ adaptation by Andrew Matthews and Tony Ross. The sections of the story that children read are when Romeo and Juliet meet at the ball (Act 1 Scene 5) and the balcony scene (Act 2 Scene 1). The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s VIPERS skills: vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, sequencing and summarising. It also contains a vocabulary check immediately after the extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. These short and snappy puzzles are perfect for engaging all of the Wimbledon lovers in your class in a wide range of maths problems! Using real-life statistics from the official Wimbledon website, students approach a number of varied maths topics, whilst also gaining valuable information about their favourite players and the history of the tournament. I have used these resources with a number of KS2 and KS3 classes, and have always found that students find them extremely interesting and informative. Some of the maths topics covered include: statistics, percentages, charts and graphs, data handling, averages, ratios, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, estimation and problem solving, critical thinking, and fractions. Some of the specific tasks involved include: working out the win ratios and percentages of top players, finding out how to reach the All-England Club from different locations, working out the best ticket combinations to buy at the ground, and comparing player performance over different tournaments. There are 30 tasks in total, in which a number of men and women players are focused upon through varied activities. The tasks are also separated by difficulty into ‘Beginner’,‘Intermediate’, and ‘Difficult’ tasks (refer to the B, I, or D symbols in the top left of each activity). All images within this resource are licensed for commercial use, and images are cited on the final slide.
