In this engaging lesson, students are introduced to the story of Moses and the Parting of the Red Sea. They learn the key facts of the story (including a recap of the events preceding it) and then consider how it shapes/ demonstrates Jewish beliefs regarding God’s ‘chosen people.’ The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey: -Knowledge recall - gauging children’s prior knowledge of Judaism - including Jewish persecution in Egypt and Moses’ early life, and the Ten Plagues; -Watching a video of Moses and the Parting of the Red Sea (hyperlinked) before answering recall questions about the key events; -Considering the deeper meanings and morals of the story - including how the story presents an image of God’s ‘chosen people’; -Considering their own attitudes towards the events of the story and its key messages, further developing their own sense of morality and spirituality; -Considering Moses’ strengths as a leader and messenger; -Thinking about great leaders in their own lives; -Completing a plenary to assess their understanding. This resource pack contains a comprehensive 18-slide Powerpoint, which contains everything that you need to teach the lesson. In the past, I have used this lesson with children from across Key Stage 2 - the key learning is aligned with curriculum expectations for RE, and also the content prescribed by most diocese regions. This engaging and purposeful lesson is the second in a series of lessons that enable children to gradually build towards composing an effective, well-structured recount. The first lesson focuses on what recounts are, establishing the main features and techniques. Whilst this series guides children towards writing a recount about an imaginary safari, the resources could be reasonably adapted to suit your own chosen topic. The eye-catching and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides teachers and children along the following learning journey: -Knowledge recall - revisiting what children already know about recounts; -SPAG starter: Word classes (nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs); -Establishing a three-part structure for the recount; -Watching a ‘virtual safari’ video (hyperlinked) to gain inspiration, and using a clear template and the five senses to build appropriate and effective vocabulary; -Sharing and building upon one another’s vocabulary and ideas; -Reflecting on their learning from across the lesson. They explore the Easter Story, recognising that there are elements of religious stories such as this that require faith and belief. The learning is guided by a clear and colourful PowerPoint presentation, which guides students through the following step-by-step journey: -Reflecting on and recalling knowledge that they already have of the Bible; -Defining the key terms ‘fact’ and ‘belief’ and differentiating between the two; -Understanding that the Bible is the text that forms of the basis of Christian beliefs, and watching a Bible story about Jesus’ death and resurrection; -Discussing how some elements of the Easter story cannot be proven to be true, but are widely-held Christian beliefs; -Completing a creative, extended learning activity based on designing Easter Gardens. -Self-reflecting on the extent to which they feel they have met the learning objective.
