KS1 Spelling Pattern Word Wheels: One Syllable Word Families

Help children practise and identify common letter strings in one syllable words using these word wheels. Children turn the wheels to see how different prefixes and suffixes create different words, and how the same spelling patterns apply to groups of words. Word Wheels covering 28 letter strings are included, such as words ending in ‘ab’, ‘ip’ and ‘ell’. The spinners are colour coded to identify the vowel with which each letter string begins. Blank templates are also included so that children can create their own word spinners.

The resources in this word family pack will help children in KS1 to practise recognising letter patterns. The resource includes: Word family posters – which are colour coded according to the vowel with which the letter string starts. Letter cards – these cards present the letter string in the centre of the card. Space is left around the letter string so that children can write words containing the letter string around it. Alternately, children could stick the word cards (see below) in this space. Word cards – these cards each contain a word from the posters. Children can investigate sorting these into piles according to their shared letter string.
