This short non-fiction writing unit is based on the extracts from the Roald Dahl book ‘Boy’ and a real life prospectus from a boarding school. Children are asked to create a balanced argument to answer the question, ‘Should children be sent to boarding school’. This resources contains a 33 slide presentation, support materials and activities for year 6 teachers to collect further writing evidence to support age related judgments.
The writing unit is designed to support children in demonstrating the skills required by the Interim Assessment Framework for 2017 - 2018. It is assumed at this point in the year that the children have been taught the skills required, but revision opportunities are offered in the scheme. The lessons do not need to be taught as a series and can be viewed as single tasks. Equally, lessons can be spread over more than one day to support the children. This resource also includes a structured editing lesson split into two sections. proof-reading and composition.
All example texts have been written to demonstrate the skills and grammar required by the Interim Assessment Framework for 2017-2018.
**STOP MARKING CHILDREN’S WRITING! **
This editing structure splits the process into two sections, proof-reading and composition. The only ‘marking’ the class teacher must do is, read the child’s work, note down any common grammatical and spelling errors, then add examples (good and bad) to the slides. I have used this process for a whole year and I’ve managed to mark 30 children’s writing AND plan an editing lesson in 40 minutes! This 23 slide notebook include all the KS2 writing writing at and above age related standard assessment criteria to help with assessing the children writing.
Give it a go and contact me if anything is unclear.
