Retelling the text 'Tuesday'

Do you use ‘Talk for Writing’ to teach writing? If so, here are a set of lessons to use for the text ‘Tuesday’ by David Wienser. Use the text example which is suitable for KS1 children. My class loved using the text maps to retell the story and were able to internalise the story very quickly. This was great to develop their story language and worked very well for both higher attainers and SEND children. The outcomes of the children’s writing was fantastic. I will definitely use this unit in my teaching again.

Phonics Writing Mat

This resource is helpful for children learning their phonics and are beginning to write using their sounds. Each writing mat includes phonemes, words that match the phoneme and space for writing. I have used these in the classroom by laminating them and children practised their writing with whiteboard pens. Also useful to have on children’s desks to help them refer to the sounds. Includes 41 pages progressing through each sound (once children know initial sounds).

These were very useful as an English lead too as they ensured good coverage of the reading objectives and progression throughout the primary school. Phonics Initial Sounds Bingo Game

Phonics Initial Sounds Bingo Game

For children learning the initial sounds, this is a perfect game to help them identify words beginning with each sound. Following the Read Write Inc sounds progression I have used this two ways… “I spy with my little eye something beginning with p…” and the child finds a picture on their bingo card or… “Who has a h-a-t?” and the child finds the hat on their bingo card or… You could give the child the sounds board and cut up the pictures to match them the other way. Real life pictures are used for real life context. It really helped my beginner readers.
