Book Week Planning: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

As last week was Book Week, I planned a week’s worth of lessons based around the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Each day, we read a chapter of the story and then engage in lessons based on what we’ve read. As you can see from the cover image, this involves lots of chocolate!! The children absolutely adored these lessons and were so engaged in the process of melting chocolate. They needed to see which chocolate would be the best to build the Indian Prince’s palace out of by melting different types of chocolate. HINT: flakes don’t melt! Honestly, a really fun week and trust me, you’ll enjoy it too. Please check out my Instagram for more of my activities for Book Week: Rebecca.the.irish.teacher

An editable book cover hunt. Children will follow the clues on the reverse side of each book cover and hunt around the school for some hidden treasure. They must write down the names of the book covers that they come across too and aim to read at least one of them that week. Just something a bit different during Book Week to engage them with different books. For more information of activities that we did during Book Week, check out my Instagram: Rebecca.the.irish.teacher.
Golden Time- Behaviour Chart

Golden Time- Behaviour Chart

(0)
This is a rewards and sanction chart in which I made with my class. It is coloured green, orange and red to indicate a child's behaviour. Each child will design their own peg at the beginning of the school year and attach it to the green section, which reads, 'I have earned all of my Golden Time'. If a child misbehaves, or doesn't follow the rules, they will then go and move their own peg to the orange section, which is labelled 'warning. If a child further disobeys the rules, they then must move their peg to the red section accordingly (i.e. 5 minutes lost, then 10 etc). The picture attached is the chart in my classroom at the moment (to show as an example), however I have upgraded and improved it to attach on TES. Year 4 SPAG test- End of Term

(0)
This resource was put together as a test for my year 4 class at the end of the year to check their knowledge of SPAG. I have attached the SPAG curriculum to ensure that I have included lots of different areas of this subject. Children are tested on: * their knowledge of punctuation (commas, question marks, speech marks and apostrophes plural and possessive). * their knowledge of SPAG terminology (main/subordinate clause, frontal adverbial, determiner, adverb, suffix, preposition, contractions). This test gave me a great insight into the progress they’ve made, but also which areas that they are still not so sure on. Pronouns

Pronouns

This resource is made with a Harry Potter theme. Children are introduced to the term pronouns through a short Harry Potter clip where they can hear how badly pronouns are needed in spoken language as well as written. I have made differentiated work resources for the children to use for low ability, middle ability and high abililty- all still based on the Harry Potter Theme. Children are encouraged to work in groups throughout this lesson to try and practice using pronouns on whiteboards, before their activity. Using a Harry Potter theme worked well in my class as it fun, colourful and different from their normal SPAG lessons, which can sometimes be boring. I have included a powerpoint, worsheets and a detailed plan with this package.

Bonfire Night: Powerpoint and Activity

Bonfire Night explained through a colourful, visual powerpoint. I have used a wide range of pictures to teach children about Bonfire Night. As I have a huge portion of EAL learners in my class, I have included simple, clear pictures that make the content easy to understand. The story is told in an interesting way, through use of speech bubbles and cartoon pictures. Easily adaptable for a younger class also. As an activity, I asked children to create a comic strip based on what they learned about Bonfire Night. For EAL or low ability learners, I have included differentiated resources and images to assist them. This resource includes: *A colourful, interactive powerpoint. *Differentiated acitivities Please leave a review on your thoughts. Thanks

I created these bookmarks to laminate and have in my children’s English books as they struggle to spell these words. By seeing them spelt correctly so often, they got better at spelling them themselves. Easy to edit also.

'Journey to Jo'Burg' Display

A simple display I used when studying the book ‘Journey to Jo’Burg’. We used this book to create pieces of writing with issues and dilemmas. (Planning is available in my shop also). Children loved the colorful characters which confirmed their understanding of what a dilemma was, while learning about the country of South Africa at the same time. *I know the sign in my cover picture (Jo’Berg) is spelled wrong, however I have fixed it in the resource itself.

Mamma Mia: Comprehension

(0)
Can’t get this song out of your head? Well neither can we! Dig deeply into the lyrics for comprehension and close reading practice with these high-interest, current songs to allow children to use their deduction and inference skills. This comprehension is based on the song ‘Mamma Mia’ from the Mamma Mia movie and Abba of course because: We all love the song Mamma Mia. It’s something a little bit different to analyse a song. The children discussed the lyrics in detail, trying to decide what they meant. It allowed them to appreciate the lyrics in songs and not just to sing them. There is a mix of questions involved in these comprehensions, asking children to: *locate information from the text *rate the effectiveness of certain words and EXPLAIN the reason for the answer *form an opinion on the lyrics. Do they like/dislike the lyrics? Why? Overall, children will gain an understanding of the meaning behind the lyrics and they will be encouraged to form opinions on a song, which is something a little bit different. I hope you enjoy this resource as much as we did! Products like this: The Greatest Showman Comprehension
