Introduce pupils to different time phrases that refer to particular tenses (past, present & future), allowing them to show off their knowledge of tenses in a simple way. After introducing the time phrases, pupils must identify which tense must be used for each time phrase that appears on the board. They do this by stepping backwards (past), stomping (present) and stepping forwards (future).

My students stick this into the front cover of their exercise books and use it to record summative assessment results each half-term, giving them an overview of their progress over the year. It’s in the shape of an arrow and, at the end of the arrow, they write their target grade/level. When they record their assessment results, they also have to write a few words to say what they will do to try to improve their result for the next assessment.

Using Monet’s painting, ‘Jardin à Sainte-Adresse’ and example sentences underneath the painting, pupils have to change one word (if it’s a noun, they can change le/la) to make a sentence of their own. This activity focuses in particular on colours and agreements.

Vocab spinners. Cut these out and use them to revise vocab. Stick a stick in the middle and pupils spin it! On the second slide are the cards to use with the spinner. Pupils pick up one of the cards and do the challenge from the spinner. The challenges are: spell it, write it, define it, use it.

French - Tenses starter activity

This PPT is on a timer, so pupils must be on their toes! When pupils read a past tense phrase, they must either point backwards or step backwards (depending on the size of the class/classroom!). For the present tense, they either stomp or point down. For the future tense, they must either point in front of them or take a step forwards.

The text is on the topic of different music genres and is aimed at KS3 or 4. In 2 teams, pupils choose a word to find in the text. The pupils don’t know what each word is worth. Click on the word they have chosen when they have correctly identified it in the text and their score will be revealed. The winning team is the team with the highest score once all words have been found in the text.
