This is a lesson that can be used as a stand alone lesson or built into a unit on Dystopian Fiction that covers the skills required to access the (9-1) strengthened GCSE Non Fiction Reading Paper. The lesson works slowly through each question type offering tips and guidance on how to access secure grades at GCSE level. Two non fiction articles are included.

This is a choice novel to study to begin to introduce the demands of the GCSE (9-1) curriculum. The narrative is highly relevant to teenagers and wider societal issues and throws up a huge range of opportunities for close analysis. In this resource activiities are courted in games/activities that are fun, supported and differentiated. There are close studies of characters, themes and links between earlier sections of the novel and this one. Consideration of language and structure is fundamental to all lines of enquiry. Following the success of the first resource I created on 'The PIcture of Dorian Gray' I have now created this second resource based on an extract from 'Oliver' by Charles Dickens. It is ideal for use with the Edexcel (9-1) English Language Specification. A current news quiz that asks students to fill the word gap in the headline. All headlines are taken from current news articles and includes World News and the 2017 Election amongst other subjects. My tutor group love these types of quizzes and ticks both tutor time and the SMSC boxes. Enjoy!

This lesson takes you through a theory based lesson using music to learn quotations from texts. This lesson has proved to be a highly enjoyable, alternative and effective approach to last minute quotation learning, even for students who struggle to retain information. Using this method of learning quotations, students are able to write more sustained responses and in turn access higher grades. If you find this useful please do leave a review. This lesson offers a route through this poem, exploring context, form, language and structure whilst also nurturing independence through guided activities.

This resource is a domino game with the narrative devices introduced at KS5, this is an engaging yet challenging way of getting students to identify what they do/don't know. This can be run as either a whole class game or print a set for each student and race to first completed (the method I prefer!).

This resources introduces KS3 and International students to the skills required to read a novel for meaning and construction. This resource includes differentiated activities including constructing a family tree, investigation of irony, consideration of intertextuality and character and thematic studies. This Man Booker Prize Winning text is an excellent text to promote reading more broadly whilst introducing students to literary devices and methods in an engaging, active and fun way. This is the first of 5 resources on this text. This resource would take between 6-10 hours teaching time.

This paper is constructed and is based on exploration of the natural world. This might work particularly well for boys as it is engaging (and a little gruesome, in parts). The questions follow the style of the Edexcel specimen assessment materials and I’ve also included a detailed indicative content to work with the mark scheme so that this is useful for parents, homeschooled learners, PRUs, tutors, independent students and teachers alike.
