Following the success of the first resource I created on 'The PIcture of Dorian Gray' I have now created this second resource based on an extract from 'Oliver' by Charles Dickens. It is ideal for use with the Edexcel (9-1) English Language Specification. This lesson takes you through a theory based lesson using music to learn quotations from texts. This lesson has proved to be a highly enjoyable, alternative and effective approach to last minute quotation learning, even for students who struggle to retain information. Using this method of learning quotations, students are able to write more sustained responses and in turn access higher grades. If you find this useful please do leave a review. A current news quiz that asks students to fill the word gap in the headline. All headlines are taken from current news articles and includes World News and the 2017 Election amongst other subjects. My tutor group love these types of quizzes and ticks both tutor time and the SMSC boxes. Enjoy!

These resources include a detailed lesson plan, powerpoint, individualised learning objectives that are aligned with the new GCSE 9-1 grades, a game board template together with a set of original and fully differentiated questions (I laminated both the board and the questions to aid longevity as the students loved this game and wanted to play it again and again). This is designed for GCSE teaching and includes a range of activities including: an activity that breaks down the language used by Shakespeare ensuing that this is not a barrier to learning, drama activities, quotation finds, matching activities, transactional writing activities and debate. This is 4-6 hours of teaching and includes reference to themes, motifs, use of language and structure: everything students need to know for their exams in an accessible and fun format.

This lesson builds on the first resource in this series (on H is for Hawk) and challenges students to work a little more independently in identifying methods used by the author in the text through a worksheet activity. This would make an ideal resource for homework or for a flipped learning activity. Students have the opportunity to engage with the demands of this IGCSE curriculum individually or in pairs whilst completing this task before then moving on to a powerpoint presentation that methodically takes students through the Ideas and Perspectives question. The lesson concludes with another independent task whereby students apply their learning on an unseen text, replicating the IGCSE exam structure. My students progressed rapidly as a result of this step by step approach and were more secure on the later extracts we studied. I hope your students enjoy these activities as much as mine did. This resource includes a past paper and the mark scheme for ease of use.

This resource covers these three interlinked chapters and challenges students to engage with characterisation, links to the motif of sacrifice, characterisation, extract analysis (and exemplar answers), peer assessment and the crafting of the two narrative strands that are linked across these chapters. This resource is fully differentiated, includes assessment with a DIRT task, close textual analysis modelled using PETAL and then supported with prompt questions, a fun wordsearch and some high order thinking tasks. This lesson is engaging, progressive and fun and offers a detailed study of both the language used in this text and the structure within these chapters and of these chapters as part of the whole novel. This resource has been an absolute labour of love. Having created chapter resources on this text, I set myself a challenge to create a revision or learning resource that covered aspects on context, quotations, links within the text, linguistic devices and narration whilst students are actively engaged. The tasks in this resource start with some straightforward questions and build towards quotation reconstruction before finishing on an analytical question. This bespoke resource on Blake’s The Tyger is designed for use with the Edexcel IGCSE curriculum but is equally useful in teaching Unseen Poetry skills required across all of the IGCSE and GCSE English specifications. These resources are designed for a low/middle ability group and as such are highly supported and differentiated. Challenge/extension tasks are included here and every step of the process is checked for understanding, reinforced and modelled to ensure all students make maximum progress. Tasks include individual work, paired work, whole group work and peer ‘teaching’ (at a low level, but is designed to encourage students to become independent learners). My students enjoyed the variety of tasks included here and I could really see progress in terms of being prepared to ‘try’ out plausible answers based on this poem.
