Teaching visual literacy is everyone's responsibility! This poster was designed as part of a cross-curriculum promotional campaign to teach staff in all faculties in a New England NSW high school about visual literacy being a component of literacy in every area of the curriculum and also to provide students with an example of how a visual image can be deconstructed to find the hidden messages. This poster is an example of how the techniques of visual literacy can be used in Agricultural Technology classes. It applies an excellent template developed by the English Teacher's Association of NSW to a popular Australian magazine on rural life.

The resource includes a poster with 4 aspects of visual literacy and a template with content, medium, emotional response and critical response. You will never look at another sports photo in the same way again!

Fiona Maxwell represents innocence, naiveity and romance. When she faces war and taking action for what she believes is right the results are interesting. This activity provides students with quotes from the novel relating to her character, selecting personality characteristics that best reflects Fi and recounting examples of her actions that reflect her innocence, naiveity and romantic inclinations.

Research task on Adolf Hitler that includes longer response questions on Hitler's treatment of the Jews and a question on whether the responder agrees with the character Mark that Hitler's behaviour was evil. Students need to use the evidence from the novel or from their research to provide examples.

Anna and Mark both embark on journeys to find out about Heidi and the world of Nazi Germany in which she lives. The issues they discover give them questions about our society today. In this activity a summary of the theme is given and students are asked to compare the issue of Nazi acquisition of Jewish homes and goods with European acquisition of Aboriginal land.

Little Tracey is an imaginative 5-year old girl who is experiencing stress at commencing school. To help her settle in the other children invent The Story Game. The activity attached to Little Tracey's character profile requires to list similarities and differences between the character of Little Tracey and very young children that the reader may know.

Robyn Mathers is the leader of the teenage guerrilla fighters in the novel, Tomorrow When the War Began. This activity provides students with salient quotes from the novel and asks them to draw conclusions about her physical appearance, her personality, role within the group and beliefs. Students are then asked to predict how Robyn would react to events in the last chapter.

Chris is an anti-hero. A pot-smoking, computer nerd who prefers his own company in the comfort of his bedroom. But when the war begins Chris has nowhere to go than to resist the new order. This activity provides quotes from the novel and asks students to assess his role in the plot.

Homer Yannos is the character that changes the most as a result of the war. From an immature larrikin figure to a guerrilla fighter who can live off the land and plan effective attacks against the enemy soldiers. This activity looks at descriptions of him before and during the war, his personality characteristics and then re-writing a speech he delivers to add a tone of anger and threat.

Lee is the outsider, migrant parents, musical, educated and thoughtful. Yet he finds a place in the resistance to the invading army who have taken the people of Wirrawee hostage. This resource provides quotes about his looks and personality and asks students to assess his background to determine his effectiveness as a teenage guerrilla fighter.
