The Heuneburg hillfort is dated to the La Tene period of Celtic culture and is a treasure trove of archaeological remains: masonry and brickwork, evidence of trade with the Mediterranean world, jewellery-making, burial mounds, evidence of warfare, metalwork and various types of buildings. Let it never be said that the Mongols didn't have a broad diet. After all, they claim to have had both white food AND red food! This activity looks at their diet, provides students with an activity involving spotting the spelling mistakes and editing these words, then designing a banquet menu for a Mongol feast. Please remind students that eating people is a sign of poor hospitality and table manners. This should only happen in extreme circumstances and MUST be a non-Mongol mercenary. Apart from this proviso students must select entrée, main course, dessert and drinks (OK - so that's only koumiss - but it can be served chilled or warm!) This episode of First Australians gives an excellent academic account of the first 50 years of contact between the Arrernte people of central Australia and the European missionaries, pastoralists and police. What makes it so amazing is that the narrative is seen by both the lens of the Arrernte people and that of the European settlers. Issues covered include: laws and Dreaming stories of the Arrernte people and the importance of this to the lives of the people, early relations between Arrernte and European peoples, the impact of pastoralism, frontier conflict and atrocities, and the clash of Arrernte beliefs and Christian missionaries. An excellent case-study in contact history.

Dispossessed of their land and all means of survival as a result of the genocidal "Black War" in Van Diemen's Land in the mid-1800s to 1832, warriors Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheener took the only option available to them, they fought back. Their guerrilla campaign resulted in the deaths of British settlers. The men were captured by the British army and transported to Port Phillip Bay (now Melbourne) to be the first men hung in the local prison. Were they freedom fighters or murderers? Unfortunately, our written evidence is entirely British. The Tasmanian Aborigines passed down their histories orally.
